It could have also been faked in photoshop or enhanced. You will never know

My guess: It's a Chinook helicopter that's currently banked in such a way that its underside is exposed to the camera.

Really... Look at a photo of a Chinook... then rotate the fuselage in your head.... It will look like that oblong 'UFO'.

Even if it isn't a Chinook... it could be another type of chopper.

^^ Found the same pic on www.guardian.co.uk
the pic looks sharper and in that pic it looks nothing more than a piece of the statue falling or someone throwing a piece of metal at the statue.

*edit*

and I don't think the guardian would add stuff using photoshop into photos.

it's debris. nothing to see here. move along. there are way better 'ufo' pictures out on the net. so much so, that a simple search will keep you busy for days, looking at convincing photo evidence of 'ufo's.
what are they???
there frickin' unidentified! that's what!

If you ask me, it looks like guided missile upon descent into the city!!! Perfect timing, huh? What are the chances of snapping a pic just when the missile flys through the FOV of the camera? Pretty slim...

Another theory is that it is just another prank, as usual.

The 'UFO' is clearly not a missile. It is a piece of metal/whatever
falling from the base of the statue. If you look at the sequence
of images, re: the missile idea, there is clearly no explo'
and all buildings are intact well after the statue is on
the ground.

Scroll down to post/images,
"Here a few you forgot"
dc.indymedia.org...

It is the 5th image down.
Oh, and I am not in the habit of trawling other
forums for images, however this is the best I could
find.

LOL Drunk. It's for all to see in umpteen vid's on mainstream
sites such as CNN, ABC...etc. The piece of metal fell during the
second and succesful(sp) felling of the statue.
P.S: D... i'll have a Tooheys Red, Ta!

No disrespect Dod, but it would have to be a huge throw.
As there are no 'tall buildings' within approx' 200 metres
of the ex statue, the lump of stone would be ending it's
trajectory vertically, not diag' or horis'. If it's possible
to throw a lump of something that far anyway.

It wouldn't be hard to make the same effect in photoshop by a beginner. I have done the same, can you tell the difference between the two? Perhaps guess which is which?

Hi, just found this sight. I started to laugh when some of you thought this was a UFO. My husband was pulling this very statue down when this photo was taken. It was a little peice of the statue that was falling. I just though all of you would like to know.
PS this is a great sight by the way.
