I've worked on 3 field schools and several more digs. One was partnered by the local municipality as part of it's bicentennial, some were rescue
operations pushed by housing development...and paid for by the developer. The field schools are paid for by UIniversities (tax money), out of tuition
and extra fees associated with the course. One friend of mine annually pays to go to Egypt to work on a pharonic site. The days of colonial
archaeology ...paying for a dig so the goodies go back to the Smithsonian for display...are long over. That's why Leakey had his research facilities
in Africa.
You're forgetting about archaeological projects that work in places in south america not too far from certain cannabis farms most likely.
some of those things do have hired escorts after all, and often they themselves are acting on the interests of local concerns.
Another friend of mine has spent his career working Neanderthal sites in the Bekkah Valley and Syria, and the toughest part was getting the local
militias to leave him alone as he studiously ignored the pot plants (for hash). Baksheesh took care of the locals.
If you would like to go and visit a place with real appeal, like a Necropolis - you'll have to go find one.
Go on, get!
Looting is illegal in pretty well all jurisdicions. Even if you own the property, found cultural heritage objects here belong to Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth II in the right of the province of Ontario. Nobody is going to break down the door to get them...but don't be turning it into a business.
Further...don't mess with the native stuff without their say-so.
Bottom line, there is a proper protocol, and real archaeologists follow it.
