Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell discusses a plan in the works to dramatically expand online surveillance. As The Wall Street Journal sums it up, "in order to accomplish his plan, the government must have the ability to read all the information crossing the Internet in the United States in order to protect it from abuse."

ah, and I predict the old "if you don't have anything to hide, you don't have anything to worry about" approach. Sadly, most people agree with that mentality it seems these days. Not me!

"Google has records that could help in a cyber-investigation," he said. Giorgio warned me, "We have a saying in this business: 'Privacy and security are a zero-sum game.'"

Sayings like that, says security guru Bruce Schneier, "are why the police aren't in charge; security and privacy are complimentary. Privacy is part of our security against government abuse. If they were really zero-sum, we would have seen mass immigration into East Germany."

Glad someone has some sense... but this is just a small symptom of the direction we are headed in.

Rawstory broke this news two days ago, and I submitted the article here. It didn't get that many replies. Hopefully yours will have better luck.

I wish I knew how to make an ASCII middle finger. So that the morons(feds not mods) monitoring this site could get a wonderful message my heart to theirs.

I think this is only a formality. Pretty sure they have it up and running already in a classified city underground.

Lets say hi to these gestapo people without any conciousness and soul.

I say all sorts of crazy stuff. All the time. Im not serious. But if they decide to spy and they see my posts they may start to think im a threat even though im totally not, and I could end up in guantanimo for having a big mouth and no common sense. What a world.

like this, Kill the president, kill Cheney, Kill rumsfeld, kill the bilderbergs blow up the banks blow up everything, I have a Nuclear weapon and im setting it off right now. # the government.

see, I say things that I will never really do. It doesnt mean anything.

I resent that my freedom of speech is hitting a wall of espionage and paranoia.

I wonder how much porn he has on his computer?

Or what porno sites he visits?

Most of these people are involved in filth themselves.

It is impossible to monitor all traffic in realtime.

simple to trick by using code word/substitution. for example the word bomb could be substituted by the word apple, ball, fizzy drink.,Mike Mcconnel,mcburgher..etc...etc...

This Mike guy is a retard.

gigabytes of data....to process.

these security people are retards.

The terrorists once aware traffic is being monitered will change tactics.

Not everyone uses internet to plot terrorist crimes. These intelligence people need to have intelligence themselves as they are clearly very stupid as more people die from crossing the road or by big pharma (240000)or cancer (560000)or get killed by doctors(80000) who are the THIRD biggest cause of death in the United States.

All traffic should be encrypted, just to frustrate these power mad psychos.

When will it stop?

When we are totally controlled by the covernment powers of this planet?

What ever happened to freedom of speach, freedom of property, human rights?

Ill stick it to the man even if i saw him in public.. this supressing way of acting, where all people are suffering from the wrongfullness made by few people are not the way to go.

Some of theese socalled chiefs have forgotten that their prime issue is to protect the people and their rights, not violate them in pursuit of criminals.

They seem to think that they have the power to do whatever suits their course...but there are ways to fight this and they will end up with people having nothing but misstrust in their system.

"the government must have the ability to read all the information crossing the Internet in the United States in order to protect it from abuse"...statements like that are totally twisted since the governments primary issue is that their people are not abused!

Stand up for your rights people! Stick it to the man

Is it time to start threads that say the opposite of what you mean? America stands for peace. The war is going well. Sounds like george.

Oh great! Now I’ll have to watch my language; utilize proper grammar; correct spelling; cross my ‘T’s and dot my ‘I’s prior to posting anything of substance to this forum. I refuse to be paranoid and feel rather ANNOYED at the fact that our freedom to express ourselves may be compromised for the sake of security from unknown abusive practices by unscrupulous characters on the internet.

Blah!
