does anyone hear high pitch frequencies all the time? some people say it might be electronics but i hear it out side to. i noticed this as long as i can remember.

i can hear high pitches louder when electronics like household appliances are on.
its the exact pitch just lower volume and i can hear dog whistles. that is why i think it is an external cause

I hear it now and again too, and so do others I know. I wouldn't be too concerned about it, I'm sure if you went to the doctor, they could give you some pills to make it "go away".

its not that bad i just here it all the time. i thought it might be electromagnetic. i here it loud right now because my tv is plugged in but not on. im going to unplug it but i will faintly here it after that. i have learned to filter it out since i was little like 5 (im 18 now).

It would be best to first rule out possible physical causes,

1. ipod/earbuds.

2. Tinnitus

3. Asthma sometimes causes sensitivity to sound

If it is none of the above I would suggest not thinking about it and allowing your brain to get used to the sound so that you will not notice it anymore. Our world is now filled with all sorts of bombarding sounds and it comes down to either living with it or allowing it to turn into a trigger of sorts for anxiety attacks or worse. Electromagnetic junk is everywhere, we have to acclimate or we will become over-sensitive to our environment. If it is an extreme case pursue it with a specialist. Also, at times it could be imo our perception of other levels, we'll know with time.

I experience the same thing. When it's completely silent, I hear a sort of high pitch frequency for a little while, then it goes away. Awkward.

like i said before its not a problem with me , it just there i had it my whole life so i can deal with it. i just like geegee explains it it soft but its constant with no change. i listen to music but at normal volume so it couldnt be ipod. i read that most people develope tinnitius but i didnt 'develope' it

If you don't want to check it out with a doctor to rule out physical causes I would suggest moving out to the country far away from any road, electrical line, cell tower, mall and throw your ipod in the trash.

Honestly, if you've had it since you were five you should've had your hearing checked by a specialist by now. It's long overdue, get it over with. It's important to check it as it could also be a fairly benign symptom of what could become a serious illness. If then it is shown that it has no physical causes I would say to start meditating and checking out the alternatives, but NOT until it is checked. I honestly believe that at times it is a shifting of our perceptions, our frequency, but you can't be sure until you've covered all the bases.

i noticed it when i five but it always has been there. ive been to texas several times (im from the suburbs of chicago). and ive walked with my cousin miles were there is nothing and i still notice it. the sound is barely noticeable. im not worried at the least i just think i have extraodinary hearing. because i thought everyone could hear it.

You don't have extraordinary hearing until it is measured by a specialist. It's painless, just headphones and hold up your finger when you hear the tone. That's it, that's all. I hope you do have higher frequency hearing, that would be great, but it still should be checked to make sure that there's not some underlying problem. Also, ipods' effects last hours after using them, usually a high toned whine, sometimes even the next day. That's the most recent cause of all this. Take care of your hearing, please. And once you're cleared of problems, come back and start a thread about the possibilities, hearing the higher frequencies and what you are hearing, fascinating.

in my school they check hearing and vision every few years and the only thing wrong they told me was that i need glasses. they do put that machine with the sounds and i get a good job. i dont see how it could be an ipod because it is a faint continuous. if it had any thing to do with an i pod it would at least increase but it doesnt. you might be able to hear it if you just listen. also my mom has good hearing so that is what im going for

I totally understand where you're coming from. I've had the same tones, sounds since I was a child also. Also I can read in the dark, I have to wear sunglasses most of the time, even in dim light as I see light everywhere. I can hear the "bops" of radar guns (never had a ticket, not once for speeding and I'm a very fast driver) I've also had many unusual occurences in my life. Here's an early example:

I got angry at one of my sisters at a school fair and decided to show her that I was old enough, and fun enough to be with her and her friend and I proceeded to the cake walk and won seven cakes (I have a sweet tooth) and also won the main prize and second prize in the school grab bag (a camera and a pencil sharpener). Righteous anger motivated me. We met up at the end of the fair and my sister and friend had a baggie with a gold fish in it and Mom made me give away all the cakes except one. Note: the cake walk lady had a talk with Mom and avoided me for several years. My Dad asked me why seven cakes? I said that made it complete, made it perfect. (I didn't even know where those words came from).

I've had a very interesting life in many ways, my friends say that I have a charmed life. I'm the type that always takes up for the underdog, when my heart feels moved to do something, I do it. I hope that you're on the same path, a christian path, and will also help along the causes of the less fortunate, motivate them, aid them, lift them at times if need be. Prayer focuses the input into you, and actually, if the tones are not from physical causes they could be your guardian angel speaking, but at an higher frequency. Just my 10 cents.

this kind of thing has happen to me most frequently. there has been several coincidences in the way i think and the ways others respond to me. just to let you know i have been raised in a christian home and i noticed that i am nice to people and also give the benifit of the doubt. i dont judge people by the way they look (i wrote a journal in school about this today). and i do these things not because some one told me they are right but i know they are right.

I have tinnitus, and what you describe is exactly what I have.

I would ask you, no matter where you are how quiet it is, middle of nowhere, does it ever go away? If your answer is 'no' it is definately tinnitus and it is nothing to worry about If your answer in Yes, it does sometimes go away, i.e. not drowned out by other noises, but you do experience silence sometimes, then I'm inclined to think it is some kind of intermittant tinnitus - I don't know if such a thing exists or not.


I also hear a high pitch or a low pitch coming from things like TV left switched on, drives me mad trying to find out which appliance in the house is emitting the noise, and is quite a good feeling to find it and turn it off. But this I don't think has anything to do with tinnitus, it's just a few eletrical components emitting a frequency.


I thought your question was going to be "why do we sometimes hear a high frequency for a few seconds" because I get that, suddenly like someone switched it on I hear a very audible perfect pitch for a couple of seconds then itturns off. I'm inclined to think this is from within the ear, because it 'sounds' internal not external.

As far as I understand, hearing high pitch noise constantly is usually indicative of permenant hearing damage. I know this from experience from cranking my head phones to full volume all the time.

Also keep in mind that we live in an extremely noisy world nowadays. Pretty much everyone in America has hearing loss to some degree. Ever notice when it gets quiter the noise in your ears get louder? Yep, that's hearing loss.

Yeah I hear this too. I couldn't sit near the computers in high school because of it. I can also hear dog whistles.

I don't understand... why is it you think that it's not something with you? With all due respect I get the feeling that you want to keep this as a "Im special" thread rather than figuring out the cause and / or the treatment.

Sounds like a nerve disorder where the hearing nerves are sending bogus info to the brain to be honest. Can't remember the name, maybe it has already been mentioned.
