Ford revealed that people within the Republican party had called him inquiring if there was a move afoot to dump Cheney from the ticket.

"Ford said to me, 'And they asked me the question in a way that makes it sound like they want me to help make that happen, which I'm not gonna do,'" DeFrank recalled Ford telling him.

While it is true that Ford is no longer around to answer whether or not such conversations took place I don't think that the claims are two far out of character. I have to say that Ford presents a nice combination of loyalty and accurate perceptions of the situations that were at hand.

IMO Ford supported for Rudy because the former New York mayor sits on the same place on the political spectrum as Ford did. Given Ford support for gay rights and the fact that he ensured that many refuges from South Vietnam found a home in the US my respect for the man has only grown.
