Please check out this video

This geologist is predicting that the fault line that caused the Boxing Day quake and subsequent tsunami is in such an energized state that a massive quake, which could be up to 9.0, will most likely occur fairly soon.

The statement is made that the tsunami caused by this size quake would literally swallow up islands in the area.

I have been worried about this possibility and also some volcanic activity in this region since the 8.4 quake, I have been monitoring USGS 5.0+ quake page and while it has calmed down slightly, numerous 5.0+ quakes are still occuring.

If you would like to keep an eye on it as well go here and bookmark it.

this is the latest as of my post:

oh my, that's not good at all.

Should the govt of Malayasia consider evacuations? But where would you move all those people to? I'm pretty sure if I lived there I would be trying to relocate, but I'm sure the majority of the population doesn't have the means to just pick up and move.

this is rather scary to think about. What can they do?

Well there has been a fair few quakes round there recently, there's no denying that, and there's just been another Magnitude 6.

Not sure how it can be moving though, since thats a subduction fault. Perhaps it is sliding along while the other plate is sliding below, considering the exact movement of the boxing day quake IIRC.

Anyway here's the last week's quakes:

Well, that's exactly what a subduction zone does - and it takes movement to achieve it. Basically what he was saying was that the upper level of the subduction zone is being rolled under at the bottom by the friction of the lower plate as it is subducted. This is causing basically a "spring-loading" on that top plate which he believes is due - soon - to release that stored energy and spring out of the rolled state and basically pop up and forward. Think about that one! That's exactly the type of mechanics needed to create a massive tsunami.

It's freaky to even think about.

Nope. We got Sumatera Island to shield our major population centres from the tsunami
The problem is if it hits north of Sumatera, then our northern regions like Penang island or Perlis state could be affected. But we'd still get about 1-2 hour warning before the wave arrives.

But I did feel a couple of mild tremors early this morning, local time. That was the first time I've ever felt it. I thought it was just me being groggy.

Edit: Tsunami, not earthquake. We can still feel mild tremors, though I wouldn't know the first thing about how strong on the Richter scale those tremors are. Malaysia hasn't got any fault lines running through its borders. Not that we know of anyway.

This is really worrying... I pray that nothing comes of this because the people who live in that area have suffered enough

Ah, I don't think I quite caught what he said then. Now I think of it, that would be one massive Tsunami, particularly with the length of that fault.

I have been keeping an eye on that site since the string of earthquakes last week also. It is very worrying the amount of medium size quakes that area is having lately.

Isn't that what caused the earthquake and resulting tsunami in 2004? A magnitude 9.0 could potentially be a repeat of that event. Hopefully lessons learned then will help save some lives this time around if it happens.

No, I don't believe so, though it was similar but much less than what he is referring to. Unless I'm totally off what caused the 2004 was a slight stress reliever (lol - slight compared to what he's referring to) that caused an undersea ledge at the fault line to break off...so basically an underwater avalanche. Now what he's talking about is that entire fault line basically leaping forward and up from a "compressed spring" position.

So instead of water displacement from an avalanche of so many miles long, he's talking about the whole leading edge of the fault line displacing the water in front of it as it lurches forward.

For those new to the Richter Scaler...

It's a logarithmic scale, which means that each number is roughly ten times more powerful than the previous, or more precisely, a two number increase is equivalent to more than a 900X increase in energy.

Adapted from Wiki:

7.0...........50 megaton............Tsar Bomba, largest thermonuclear weapon.
7.5...........178 megaton..........1976 Tangshan earthquake
8.0...........1 gigaton................San Francisco, CA earthquake, 1906
.............................................Earthquake near Chincha Alta, Peru, August 07
.............................................Earthquake near Indonesia September 12th 07
9.0...........5.6 gigatons............Anchorage, AK earthquake, 1964
9.3...........32 gigatons.............2004 Indian Ocean earthquake

The effects of a 9.0 would affect several thousand miles, potentially. Fingers crossed for our good buddies over there!

Ya that was it. I looked it up later when I had some time and thats basically what I found. The whole spring thing was a video I had seen on what would cause a Mega-Tsunami recently and got them confused. Thanks for the clarification Valhall.

this might sound totally offbase, but is there a possibility that the activity in the indonesia region correlates directly to activity around Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands?

I was just noticing that on the USGS list of earthquakes, there been lots of activity in that area.

just wondering...

The latest quake in the Indonesia region:

Magnitude 6.6 - KEPULAUAN MENTAWAI REGION, INDONESIA

Strong earthquake hits Sumatra Island

Jakarta (dpa) - A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale jolted Indonesia's Sumatra Island on Thursday, the same area hit by a powerful tremor last week that killed 24 people and injured more than 115, Indonesia's meteorology agency said.

An official from Jakarta said this was another aftershock from the big quake a few days ago.

Not a 9.0 but I am hoping that these series of smaller events are actually relieving pressure on the fault rather than increasing the pressure.

These people from this area deserve a break.

This one is in the vicinity of the Anak Krakatoa volcano, I hope this is random, this is the one volcano that worries me.

Magnitude 5.2 - SUNDA STRAIT, INDONESIA

One of five 5.0+ quakes reported today in the region, as of my post.

Concerning amount of activity starting up? Could this be a precursor of another large quake?

There is a great Antipodes Map here: www.antipodemap.com...

When a quake hits - you can then see the antipodes of it, and how it affects the opposite on the other side of the world.

Also two really good sites with all kinds of information on quakes and what is happening with them - including expectations in the future..

One is Earthboppin - link here: earthboppin.net...

The above one has Earthquake sensitive people's postings also.

Another site which is Jim Berkland's site is here:

www.syzygyjob.com...

Also another site - which is good is Here:

www.quakecentralforecasting.com...

Also one other thing people may want to do. I get an email everyday from a person who studies/expert in Earthquakes - in regards to the degrees of quakes to another one - the weather causes, geomagnetic storms - the history of the quakes that day, to predictions of quakes - to the date and magnitude.

you can email him and ask him to add your email address to receipt of the daily emails - all about Earthquakes:

eqforecasts at gmail.com

I have seperated the above email address - so it does not get spammed.

Lowell Whiteside - who sends out the emails everyday - has been expecting a huge quake on the Puerto Rico trench - due to it being overdue - (but if you look up the history of quakes there - you will see the magnitudes have increased - besides the amount of quakes happening have a dramatic increase.)

The expectations of when the Puerto Rico trench Big quake happens a tsunami will happen at the same time - as it has in history.

Picture of how the Antipode looks

Admittedly, I don't know much about earthquakes and geology in general to posit anything very meaningful - but sometimes it's the outsiders ignorance that contributes something meaningful, eh?

I couldn't help but notice in the above illustration denoting recent quakes that there seems to be an exhorbitant number of volcanoes in the area. So, in addition to a release of the subduction pressure, would that likely have the affect of also releasing volcanic activity? It would seem to me that we might be looking at a triple assualt - earthquakes, tsunamis AND volcanic activity. That CAN'T be GOOD!

Again, I don't follow this stuff as closely as most of you, but I certainly appreciate the knowledge and wisdom that you all provide in educating the rest of us and making us "Aware".
I'll be following this thread closely as I am extremely interested in reading all of your input on the matter. This could potentially have Earth-changing consequences.

Someone already mentioned it in this thread but Krakatoa is a perfect example of the way a volcano can pummel an area with a combination of earthquakes, pyroclastic flows and tsunamis. I'm pretty sure it's also fairly accepted that large earthquakes can influence volcanic activity in that they can potentially reopen or enlarge existing conduits used by magma.

The earthquake swarm in Indonesia is interesting as it is clustered around one area. Could be undersea localized tension being released, volcanic activity or, less likely, the start of a large rupture.

Screw YS for now , we got a bigger supervol to worry about which is in North Sumatra, Indonesia

en.wikipedia.org...

this baby is pretty much in the area where all of these quakes are now going on / and if she blows as with YS we are all screwed.
