Not sure how it can be moving though, since thats a subduction fault. Perhaps it is sliding along while the other plate is sliding below, considering the exact movement of the boxing day quake IIRC.

Basically what he was saying was that the upper level of the subduction zone is being rolled under at the bottom by the friction of the lower plate as it is subducted. This is causing basically a "spring-loading" on that top plate which he believes is due - soon - to release that stored energy and spring out of the rolled state and basically pop up and forward. Think about that one! That's exactly the type of mechanics needed to create a massive tsunami.

Well, that's exactly what a subduction zone does - and it takes movement to achieve it. Isn't that what caused the earthquake and resulting tsunami in 2004? A magnitude 9.0 could potentially be a repeat of that event. Hopefully lessons learned then will help save some lives this time around if it happens.

Strong earthquake hits Sumatra Island
Jakarta (dpa) - A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale jolted Indonesia's Sumatra Island on Thursday, the same area hit by a powerful tremor last week that killed 24 people and injured more than 115, Indonesia's meteorology agency said.
