Russia will destroy all stockpiles of chemical weapons in Russia by 2012. Russia's first deputy defense minister announced today that the stockpiles will be gone by 2012 for certain, as they take this important issue very seriously.

RIA Novosti: Russia confirms pledge to destroy all chemical weapons by 2012

09/ 08/ 2007

Russia will fulfill its obligations under an international agreement to destroy all its chemical weapon stockpiles by 2012, a senior defense official said Thursday.

[---]

Army General Alexander Belousov, who is also Russia's first deputy defense minister, said told a news conference in Moscow: "This is an important issue, and we take it seriously. We are certain that all stockpiles of chemical weapons in Russia will be destroyed by 2012."

That's something to look forward to. 2012, I can't wait. I wonder if they know something that we don't know...

that sounds like good news,

but i really think the decision was based on economics
rather than being a magnamious gesture, or a epiphany...

it probably costs mega rubles to safely store & safeguard those stockpiles
the best cost-benefit disposition was to destroy the chemical weaponry.

so? now what? more biologicals instead?

It seems like many of the world's governments are making these kind of plans during the 2012-2013 period. Makes me wonder if the powers that be know something is coming that is basically going to force them to give up such things. I wait in giddy anticipation.

Maybe Tunguska would be a good place to bury it? Lightning never strikes twice... hopefully...

Simple... you use them

Isn't 2012 suppose to be the end of the world or something? maybe a plan "dispose of your weapons" aka "fire your # and we'll fire our # and thats the plan"

EDIT: Why would they destroy their weapons? comon! I'm just thinking here but.. like "we will destroy our chemical weapons, so you should too... how do we know they really are and its not a trick?

What is a "chemical weapon anyway? Is gun powder not a chemical?

Tunguska

Wow. I mentioned Tunguska, and then what happened?

Three-Tonne Tunguska Meteorite Stolen In Russia

But it's probably not related to 2012 and the stockpiles of Russian chemical weapons...

Doesnt matter. They wont get rid of the know how and they are only getting rid of the assembled weapons. The know how and the chemicals themselves still remain and they could build new ones over night so this is ALL symbolic. Just like Japan could become a nuclear weapons power in a matter of weeks if it wanted to, but isnt considered one now because they dont have any assembled weapons.

Yeah Russia will "destroy" their chemical weapons by 2012. So in other words, to use their chemical weapons during this time till 2012. They must have already have their sights set on which country to go up against.

You know something smells fishy when things come up from out of the blue like that.

They should have said "dispose" The pubic would be less terrified.

I agree, more than likely a money issue than anything else.
PLUS, in this day and age, chemical weapons are all but defunct.

Its mini nukes, viruses and cruise missiles...

So this is more likely just a '' look how peaceful and nice we are ''
instead of '' we geunuinley care about peace, so we will destroy our haneous weapons ''

Hmmmm still given all the whoo haa over 2012 (my favourite being ailens comming out of the closet) i wonder if they are making themselves look good in preparation for the event. Probably more mundane reasons as others have said ie money, but still i am keeping my fingers crossed for an ET angle on this
