When I was in Perth on a visit in the 60's I remember being told that West Australia had one gunboat patrolling the entire WA coast. Its armament was one gun with dummy shells.

Ive got a rowing boat I could sell them?

I doubt that there was only one patrol boat on the west coast.
River class destroyer escorts were around in the 60s

spain flies sea harriers and the Buque de Proyeccion Estrategica will have a ski jump for when their sole planned dedicated carrier is rotated back to port.

These Indon kilo subs sure do put a spanner in the works for the Australian navy. With 1.2 billion USD for just 2 kilo class subs one can safely assume that the package includes:

1) The latest stealthiest kilo derivative (Type 636M)
2) In depth and intensive crew training
3) Perhaps even Russian onsite expertise in the form of manpower and dockyard setup.

The kilos that the PLAN got were for a measly 250-300 million USD a piece, so 2 -3 kilos for +1 billion USD seems to carry a lot of infrastructure with it.

EDIT: The deal is for 2 subs, 22 helis, and 20 tanks. So the price maybe right after all.

Anyone know what kind of helis and tanks? I'm thinking Mi-17s and T-80s.

Maybe the Russians just ripped off the Indonesians big time...two for $1 billion? That's serious money.

Good question.
The Kilos are the best the Russians have to offer in the SSK dept and are w/o AIP.
Im not sure if Collins has AIP.

Overall, I would give the Collins an edge over the Indon Kilos on grounds of better wiring (electronic internals, sonar etc) and crew skill.

EDIT: 1 Billion USD each?!!! Are you sure? Then they'd better be better than the kilos! Twice as much better!

Well thats inclusive of design and development, that 6 billion figure.
The Kilo price is not inclusive of that.

Australia built 8 Anzacs to replace 6 Rivers, an additional two ships. Australia built and/or bought 6 FFG-7s to replace 3 Vampires and 3 Adams, while the FFG-7s weren't Adams, they were much better than the Vampires.. Now Australia will be building 3 Hobarts to replace 4 FFG-7s, and there is still a possibility of a fourth, the discarded 2 FFG-7s being replaced by building 2 Canberra LHDs, and we still have 8 Anzacs. That is the way I see the shipbuilding program in hindsight. Australia is doing very well even if the fourth Hobart isn't bought or built.

As Naval Officer, i am deeply impressed by the Australian Governments naval strategy. Not surprising really with the most populous Muslim country to their North/North West, plus the region is deeply unstable. The combination of ridiculous levels of piracy in the straits of Malaca, the on going build up of the Chinese Navy, the JMSDF expanding to counter this, Pakistan and India further afield and the draw down in New Zealands Naval forces. I wish the British Government would start to give the RN the resources we need, just because barbarians are not at the gates doesn't mean we should draw ourselves down to a Coastal Defence Force. The CVF programme is starting to look dicey in my eyes especially as Defence is Not "Sexy" and with 2 on going conflicts money is an issue. But i digress.
If Australia carries these plans through to fruition it will be in a stong position for decades to come.
P.S Armidale patrol craft are quite cool...

I full endorse and back your comments above. Static missile defences are not a good way forward. The (Star Wars X) Missile defence shield for the US is currently causing a fair amount of political fallout with the CIS and US, with smaller states like Lithunian, Georgia, Belarus and Ukraine being pawns for support for either side. With Russia having massive finacial gains from the high price of energy, they are announcing numerous new Submarines and military projects. The Recommencing of Bear Bomber flights in the Northern Atlantic (Over Norway & UK) is a disturbing trend. The Eagle and the Bear may yet return to stand off against one another.

Actually Defence is probably more 'Sexy' than it has been for a long time. There is talk of accelerating major projects as a means of providing a stimulus to the economy. I think the CVF's are pretty safe, if for no other reason because of the constituencies they are being built in. I don't think the Navy has done too badly recently. The Albion Class landing Platforms, The Darings (I'm sorry we don't need more than six, they are the Navy's equivalent of the Typhoon), Astute (desperately needed, and in sufficient numbers) and of course the future Nuclear Deterrent Platform. My main concern is agreeing an affordable, quality future Frigate design. The major problems facing the RN is the inability of BAE to deliver anything on time and on budget and coming to terms with the fact that one of its major roles is now acting as a taxi service for our hard pressed Army.
