G-8 Protesters Clash With German Police

news.yahoo.com

Masked demonstrators showered police with grapefruit-sized rocks and beer bottles, then were driven back with water cannon and tear gas during a protest march Saturday against the upcoming Group of Eight summit in Germany.

The clashes left smoke from burning cars and the sting of tear gas drifting through the harborfront area in the north German port of Rostock. Some 146 police were hurt, 18 of them seriously.

I just saw this on the TV news, and I must say the situation looked pretty much chaotic. Showers of rocks, tear gas, burning police cars, water canons, helicopters; and 150 policemen hurt - the arrested number of protestors in still unknown. Things are going to be worse in the evening. 13,000 police against 80,000 protestors.

Luckily, those riots din't excalate to the same point as the G8 protests in Italy a few years ago.
While the roughly 1000 injured people sure are nothing to joke about, even the organisators of the marches said that the police acted responsible and exercised great restraint.
At least, German police didn't use the same fascist tactics the italians used back then.

Agreed.

We all remember GENOVA!

  • On Friday July 20, a 23-year-old Anarchist activist Carlo Giuliani of Genoa, was shot dead by Mario Placanica, a Carabinieri officer, during clashes with police. Images show he was about to hurl a fire extinguisher into their Jeep. The Carabiniere was acquitted from any wrong-doing, as judges determined he shot for legitimate defense.

  • Activist Susanne Bendotti was struck by a vehicle and killed while attempting to cross the French-Italian border at Ventimiglia to get to the Genoa demonstration.

  • Genoa demonstrator and labor unionist Maria Jose Olivastri was found naked and strangled in Padua shortly after the summit. Her death was not found to be politically motivated.

  • Genoa demonstrator Edoardo Parodi, a close friend of Carlo Giuliani, died after Genoa after experiencing severe health problems possibly related to the police use of CS gas during the event, or possibly related to the use of CS gas during the demonstration against the World Economic Forum which he also attended.

  • Rumors of further deaths and Genoa demonstrators who remain missing after the summit continue to circulate.

This event is significant mark my words!

One of my friends has been following this and says that Police injuries are greater than protester injuries.
When the Police go in to arrest someone the crowd counter attack and save the person.... This is absolutely devistating for Police morale to be so out manourverd and not feared in the least ...but it gets worse.

This G8 conference is the biggest mobilization of the German army since WW2 and seen in terms of German history; major protest events just after WW1 when Germany was only days away from going communist and similar massive struggles in the streets in the 1930s.... in that context this is a major event.

And why are these people protesting ? I don't know but they are seriously concerned i suggest; about some of the same issues that you who are reading this are concerned about;
What makes history is that in some of the largest and most violent protests that Europe has seen, public opinion is changing so that what ever the G8 leaders finally say or do may well be irrelevant
(except ofcourse the Bush Putin dispute which has as effectively wrecked the G8 meeting as the protests outside)

Now I have no idea how you go about flagging something... but this is REALLY REALLY significant.

Great. Demonstrators demonstrate. Throwing things that could strike and hurt law enforcement officers -NO ! Other civilians NO too.

Better to hit really hard at the election polls of all Countries involved within G8..

ACAB.

Don't forget; the number of injured police officers is often exagerated, the same with news reports.
On german sources there was a report about 60 police officers slighty injured going to hospital because of skin and eye irritations resulting from protester's smoke bombs.

the only problem is; you certainly can't get skin irritations from smoke. So it was probably their own, excessively used pepper-sprays.

After all it would look pretty obvious if they published numbers like "50 injured police - 500 injured protesters."

There is alot of confusion about the numbers published by officials. They were at some point speaking of 50 severely injured officers, but the hospitals only had 2 stationary treatments of police officers.

Ridiculous.

If the police, for a change is not provoqing agressive escalations, that's good in my opinion. But you also have to know that the majority of protesters is there for peaceful demonstrations, also the main organisers distance themselves from the agressive block, from the minority.

Even the thousands of people who reached the last fences before the G8 residentials due to superior tactics, are not agressive. Many organisers try to inform and contact the police for a peaceful outcoming, even if the police is not always cooperative.

Also, the Extreme Right, Racist Party NPD was forbidden to hold demonstrations by the police. But surprisingly enough the police included delicate information about the whereabouts of "weapon" supplies and "agressive" anti G8 protester camps, within the written reply to the fascist parties.

Guess some people will have to understand, that there is alot of smoke-screening in media-reports.

You will have to learn a few things around here, Bartgirl.

Things are not just black or white.

Welcome on ATS anyway.

After all it's about the concentration of Evil "Summit", which causes many of the things we are discussing on ATS every single day.
