Say a new song comes out, with their current band, maybe solo, maybe with someone else. When you hear these songs for the first time you know AUTOMATICALLY who it is.

5- I'll leave this one open, I have a few ideas.
4- Eddie Van Halen
3- Slash
2- David Gilmour
1- Brian May

This is about distinctive sounds, something you hear that no one else can reproduce. Not who's the best.

Who's up in your opinion?

Thanks a lot KL, those were the 2 I was torn over. Leaning toward Carlos though. More distinctive imo.

Steve Vai.

Carlos Santana.

Mark Knoffler.

Peter Frampton.

Dead now but back in the day i could pick a Randy Rhoads riff everytime.

David Gilmour (the man who inspired my guitar playing; I can play a lot of his songs), Peter Frampton, those two guys from DragonForce, Slash, Eric Clapton, Angus Young, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Bob Marley, Paul McCartney, Randy Rhoads, and Eddie Van Halen (he looks like crap now).

Stanley Jordan.

Not one of my favorites, but distictive, with his two handed tapping tecnique.

I have many favorites but here's a name nobody mentioned so far Jeff Beck..

I'm kinda surprised no one has mentioned the late Dimebag Darrell yet. He has one of the most distinctive guitar styles i have ever heard, and i can pick on of his riffs out no problem everytime. Also, Tom Morello of Rage and Audioslave uses so many effects its not hard to pick him out of a crowd.

I was going to mention Beck but i think for a distinctive style Clapton and Page were probably in front. Still a great guitarist though.

I'm wrapped to see a few still remember the Randy Rhoads magic.

Edit to add Robert Cray to my list.

Matthew Kiitchi Heafy from Trivium has a distinct sound I find, and Phil Collen from Def Leppard for sure.

The ones that I could pick without actually knowing the songs
would be probably:

Angus Young

Brian May

Tom Sholz

Robin Trower

Automatically know who it is.. lets see...

I have to agree Brian May without a doubt.

Malcolm Young (He is the real backbone of the AC/DC sound)

I can spot Chet Atkins pretty quick

Duane Eddie has a real distinctive sound

Dick Dale as well.

Albert the iceman Collins

Leslie West

Santana

I want to say SRV and Eddie.. but I know to many people that can just nail their sound now.

I really disagree with Tom Sholz. Have you ever played though a Sholz Rockman? you would swear whatever you were playing was on Third Stage

A tough question if you really think about it. A guitarist with a really distinct sound that becomes popular, becomes imitated. So sometimes it's tough to tell, especially if you're not familiar with the song.

The guys I can typically pick out quickest - Santana, Clapton, Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Pete Townsend.

Walsh has that deadened string ka-CHUNK you can't miss.
