(CBS) For the first time, the chairman of the independent commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks is saying publicly that 9/11 could have and should have been prevented, reports CBS News Correspondent Randall Pinkston.

"This is a very, very important part of history and we've got to tell it right," said Thomas Kean.

"As you read the report, you're going to have a pretty clear idea what wasn't done and what should have been done," he said. "This was not something that had to happen."

Appointed by the Bush administration, Kean, a former Republican governor of New Jersey, is now pointing fingers inside the administration and laying blame.

"There are people that, if I was doing the job, would certainly not be in the position they were in at that time because they failed. They simply failed," Kean said

This comming from a former Republican governor!

Kean promises major revelations in public testimony beginning next month from top officials in the FBI, CIA, Defense Department, National Security Agency and, maybe, President Bush and former President Clinton.

I really hope that the people of USA and the WORLD will learn the real truth when this is over.

And it now really seems that the real truth is something else than as told by the current admin,
as told by the Bush crime family (c) Colonel.

Plausible deniability anyone?

I wouldn't get exited about any stories of this type, we've seen them since the event in the exact proportion of small, large and spaced out properties for an exact purpose.

People will accept incompetence. They will accept the story that 'we made a mistake this time, it'll never happen again'. They'll bitch and moan about the incompetence of the incumbents and the system but equally they'll be placated by the 'we're only human' excuses that make them seem like well meaning bunglers.

It's the old 'it's my first day on the job' excuse in political terms. They will eventually accept responsibility, but only on their terms.

"Preventable"...as in "avoidable"?

The 100 Year War
The American Civil War
WWI
WWII
Korean War
Vietnam War
Russia's Afghanistan War
The 1st Gulf War

The Crucifixion of Christ
That was for a purpose (not to get into religious entanglement) no reason for it to be prevented.

The fall of the Roman Empire
Inevitable.

The French Revolution
Why should that have been prevented?

The 100 Year War
Dont know enough about it to comment.

The American Civil War
Ditto

WWI
Have my own theories on it, but probably unpreventable eventually.

WWII
Unpreventable

Korean War
don't know enough about it.

Vietnam War
Defiantly preventable.

Russia's Afghanistan War
Defiantly preventable.

The 1st Gulf War
Definitely preventable

The 2nd Gulf War
Defiantly preventable.

Those that where defiantly preventable were so because someone had to make an individual decision to start them. There where other alternatives, and no immediate undeniable threat, so by definition they were preventable. I'm not saying that is a valid reason to ignore a threat, but all those decisions were avoidable, and if efforts had to put into other means in the same way they have always been put into the projected threat and application of force, they more than likely wouldn't have occurred in the first place.

Yes, Pearl Harbor is definitely in this category.

But Dean isn't. This isn't about US party polictics, it's about 9/11 and getting the truth out.

to the last comment. Not good form.

You know what else was preventable?

9-11! Meaning that 3,000 people never had to die! The World Trade Center never had to be destroyed! And what was Bush doing to handle the situation? Runnin scared in Air Force 1!

Thanks Keg...

How about this one:

If Clinton would have taken the deal from the Sundanese for Bin Laden....would 9/11 been avoidable:preventable?

The real question is was 9/11 'realistically and reasonably' "preventable"?
Can't any act of terrorism be coined "preventable"?

I mean:
OBL did declare war on the US...therefore, we knew a terrorist attack could happen....

The US knew, from the past, that terrorist have hijacked planes before....

The US knew that Al Queda' has performed terrorists attacks on US targets in the past....

Did we know that 19 terrorist were going to hijack airliners and simultaneously attack the WTC on 9/11?

Personally, anything can be coined "preventable", well except: death and taxes....

According to the same people who say 9/11 was unpreventable, it can. How many stories have you heard of potential terrorist attacks being 'prevented' or thwarted since 9/11? no doubt many.

Did we know that 19 terrorist were going to hijack airliners and simultaneously attack the WTC on 9/11?

Yes. but of course that's a matter of opinion.

We aren't talking about what is preventable in an enveloping cosmic sense of the inevitable, or what humans deem as inevitable in terms of acts of instinct or history given human nature or even acts of God. We're talking about what is preventable to our governments given the collective knowledge of their intelligence services, that's a totally different scenario to death and taxes.

I can't quote decisively on the Sudanese question, need more info. I don't like to replace knowledge with arrogant supposition.
