At the time it was not a large base and would hardly require 8 years to construct, infact it took less than a year. It was clearly not being constructed in October 1952 as can be seen in this USGS satellite photo, compare that to this photo from Sept 1959 showing just how small the base was at that time.

I think its pretty safe to say there is no connection between Roswell and the base at Groom Lake.
