Hyperlinking - for the BB Code Challenged

Topic started on 17-7-2006 @ 07:18 PM by Mechanic 32

One of the members here, had asked me how to insert a hyperlink using colored text.

I present here what I hope is a concise and easy to follow tutorial, to the newcomer
unfamiliar with bb code.

Hyperlinks are'nt very nice looking:

www.abovetopsecret.com...

To add some appeal, or to better describe what the link is for, you can make a linkable text message.

Adding Text to a Plain Hyperlink

When you reply (or start a thread), Notice the little icons above the text entry box.

The one with the globe is for creating text hyperlinks.

The first text box popup that appears, is for the text that you want to show on the page, in this case:

"Larrys Hyperlink Tutorial".

The next (last) text box that pops up, is for the url of the link like so

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/

you should have something like this:

Larrys Hyperlink Tutorial imo, not a very nice color.

--Adding BB Code to the common hyperlink to add color--

To add colored text to the link, to the hyperlink alreadt created by the above method, you will have to add [color=blue] for instance After the url, and after the first "]"but BEFORE the text that you want to appear.

AFTER the text that you want to appear, you have to enter [/color] to turn off the code for color.

Any time you use bb code, there is always one code to start, and one to end the coded segment.

Okay, now for some examples. These link to the ATS main page.

[url=http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/]Larrys Hyperlink Tutorial[/url]

will appear as:

Larrys Hyperlink Tutorial <--- click

Now to add color. I think that primary colors and a few others work, I have'nt tried that many. (blue, green, red, brown, black, white, yellow, etc.)

For some real examples:

okay we will use blue. (it's my favorite color)

[url=http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/][color=blue]Larrys Hyperlink Tutorial[/color][/url]

will appear as:

Larrys Hyperlink Tutorial <--- click

Okay, are you with me so far? Okay, good. (hope you did'nt say no)

--Using Pictures as a clickable Link--

Now to make a picture linkable. Neat, huh?

okay first I have to show you image bb code.

Displaying Images

http://uploads.abovetopsecret.com/ats34826_awman.jpg

is the image url, not to be confused with the link url.

To make the image appear, you have to use [ats] and [/ats] before and after the image url, respectively.

Are you still with me? okay, good!

it should now look like this:

[ats]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/uploads/ats34826_awman.jpg[/ats]

Which will produce this:

Make the Image Linkable

Now we can insert our image into the previous code.

We are going to use the same link url.

[url=http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/][ats]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/uploads/ats34826_awman.jpg[/ats][/url]

will appear as:

<--- click

It's much harder to explain, than to actually do. It gets easier after the first few times.

Thanks guys!

It was a lot harder to actually do, than it looks.

I had to insert some extra bb code, in order for the examples to be viewable.

After about 35 minutes, plus a little more editing (to add clarity) I finally got it to where everything is as I planned it.

Whew! I'm glad it's done, and over with!

If anyone notices any errors there, please let me know.

Just one. You forgot to mention that this sort of thing has been in the ATS Handbook since it was created years ago by our illustrious and talented Supermoderator, ZeddicusZulZorander, and which is always visible linked in a sticky thread at the top of this very Freshman's Forum.

You can also find a link to the Handbook in the links on the left in your Member Center.

Here's a direct link to the BBcode section of the handbook:

handbook.abovetopsecret.com...

Up the top you'll also see links to many other sections.

I think it's great how Zedd has taken the time to create this resource for ATS members, enabling us to spend more time contributing in the way that really makes ATS shine out amongst the crowd of conspiracy websites, i.e making quality posts on conspiracy topics, rather than wasting time writing tutorials and trying to expand our "fanbase".

Three cheers for Zedd!

Thank you, wecomeinpeace.

The request I recieved specifically asked about creating a hyperlink using colored text:

That is not covered directly in the handbook, and neither is how to make a picture "clickable" . But thank you for your input.

Also, you may already know, when I greet new members here, I do emphasize the fact that there is that great resource available to them:

Need help with the site? Find it here.

ATS help files

The wording may be different, but it links to the handbook, all the same.

I know of at least 4 members that appreciate my efforts. The 2 above, the member that originally requested the help, and the member that sent me the u2u this morning. That makes it all worthwhile.

wcip, are you making commission on the sales of the handbook?

And to Zedd, thanks for the updated handbook.
