I wonder if this means we will also be asked to shrink our avatars.

At least the resource hungry animated gifs, and low compression jpgs...

And maybe the size of posted pictures, as well.

I think that was part of the reason behind the 'external image' fiasco... To try to minimize the pics that are actually showing up on the pages?

I know SO is busy, and don't expect a reply soon, just curious...

edit = add following....

I did have a question though, when we recieve u2u's, is it going to still show on the upper right side of the screen?

Yes, it still works the same way. There are no images involved with that, so no changes. I just sent myself a u2u to check on that.

It would be okay if it actually matched the rest of the layout, but it's so random and sticking out. Reading text is for suckers. Blindly swinging towards graphics is the easy way to go. Text should be boxed in like before on EDIT buttons etc so you know the approximate click-zone.

First Pokerstars made their layout worse and now this. Seems today is the day to update your site and make it crappier
. Soon ATS will be nothing but advertisements and archives if it keeps going like this

When the 'EDIT' gets underlined, you know that you are in the click zone. So, no problem, imo.

Helps tremendously for dialup users like me. My connection seems to crawl sometimes, and this helps out a great deal.

And the owner said "let there be a MyNew button"

And so it was created.

Thanx

Yeah right... This month we are on track for over 2 MILLION unique visitors. Posting is at an all time high as well.
A site like this one, very database intensive, requires a balance between images and being able to serve the page.

What good is a page full of pretty little boxes if you can't see it because the server can't load it?

Sheesh...

Plus we had that server crash (with the new ones *gasp*) not too long ago. I don't mind sacrificing a few graphics to make sure I can get on to ATS whenever I want. It was not nice to go into ATS DT's. Plus the content itself hasn't changed, just how we get to it. I think that is fine. Anything to make the pages run faster, imo, is a great thing.

Let's see:

- Takes up less real estate on the page

- Fewer images to load, yielding faster page loads

- Lower bandwidth required on all ATS pages

- Sleek, sexy and slim new look

I'd say it's a win.

AGREED nice new look

Just noticed that the 'ATS Help Files' link is missing.

I'm sure it is either an oversight, or is already in the works.

But truly a useful feature for newer members.

Also the format seems a little skewed right now...

Okay, I see...

The Edit and Quote links were tweaked to enlarge the 'click zone' mentioned earlier.

There are other ways to go around that problem other than catering to the lowest common denominator. Akamai for example.
Even though it's nice to do everything by yourself, it's by no means necessary to do so. Granted, I don't know how much Akamai would charge for caching the icon data, but I'm sure someone here will know.

I understand why this happened, but that doesn't make me like it...

I dunno if someone already mentioned it, but what's up with that sole red lin between Chat and News? It's kinda distracting... not really, just curious. Also, I really like the new format... seems more, professional I guess.

I wouldn't have a problem with smaller avatars...

I have my screen resolution way up and the avatars still look more than big enough, plus there's the fact that if you surf without signing in, everything is much tighter and runs a little faster (minus the pop-ups).

I like the nav bar opposed to buttons, if you centered that sucker and gave us more profile options, ATS would be Myspace for the investigative, the knowledgeable, the paranoid, and those of us who have experienced something incredible.
