In an attempt to curb the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction the US is sponsoring a new treaty that if ratified would outlaw the production of weapons grade plutonium and uranium.

cnn.netscape.cnn.com
GENEVA (AP) - The United States proposed a treaty Thursday it said would curb proliferation of nuclear weapons and improve the world's leverage against ``hard cases'' like Iran and North Korea by banning production of weapons-grade uranium and plutonium.

Well since all of the countries that are legally allowed nuclear weapons have already stop producing them and have drasticallly reduced their arsenals this could be a great step forward in curtailing the spread of WMD. Of course this still all depends on the treaty being ratified and then enforced.

Whats the point, they dont want any treaties to apply to them and would just withdraw from it when it suits them.

They only want it for leverage for an invasion against countries if they think theyre breaking it.

This is great news. This is exactly what the US' view on nukes should be for the next 100 years. One final Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty could lead to world peace if all members respected each other and took it serious.

If I was the Bush Administration I would follow this policy up with an international space initiative to unite global space agencies to work on one project alone, the project of inhabiting the moon and later on mars.

How cool would that be?

Nice idea but what's the point when other countries already have a stockpile of nukes? imo it's just to stop any more nations making them, it doesn't take away the threat of current nations with them.

The US should give up their stockpile of Nuclear weapons and place them under UN control. Other countries should then follow suit. Also the banning of materials needed to make nuclear weapons should be enforced.
This leaves a situation where the only actor that has nuclear weapons is the UN, thus world peace (or closer to).
Will this ever happen? No.

Youre #tin me? No country who put so many resources into their nukes is going to give them up unless it is by using them at some point. It aint ever going to happen as long as there is distrust between east and west and thats never going to end so nah.

The US should place its nuclear weapons under UN control? What? That would be insane! Radiation for food anyone?

What about the cold war between Russia and the US. Both of those countries agreed to dismantle hundred of Nukes between the two?

There are two countries right there that have done it in the past, why couldn't it happen in the future?

There are two options that we are given here; do we continue to build up our forces and stockpile our nukes or do we aim for nuclear disarmament and world peace.

I truly believe that world peace is not out of reach. All it takes is mutual respect and cooperation with one another, is that so hard to do?
