Yeah I just saw the earthquake notice, (I'm subcribed to the USGS earthquake RSS feed) an 8.0 quake at Tonga.Tsunami warnings are issued for New Zealand and the Fiji Islands.

Glad I don't live on the coast in Australia then.... whew!
Could it hit south America? Would take awhile obviously, but do the tsunami waves ever die out on their own?

I think the best advice is:
Get away from the Coast!

As there is no way to acertain if there will be a tsunami, it is better to prevent.

I just hope nothing serious happens. At least, this has been known in advance, enough advance to take the appropiated safety measures...

Please note the announced depths at which seismic events have occurred - look for "even round" numbers. Then check the last 3-5 "big" quakes in Iran (and other major seismic events) for the "even round" epicenter numbers too. Hmmm.

Natural quakes happen at all kinds of depths - even in the same "fault" areas - not many at all near the surface and almost never at exact round-figure depths. If coincidental then this is a bizzare statistical aberration - if not then "someone-got-some-'splainin-to-do".

How can quakes' epicentral-depth be at such precise round and even values? I'm no geology-whiz but it seems that quakes might happen at various random depths (depending on geology) and wouldn't fall at numbers so regular. I don't believe the USGS rounds the numbers that much (them ol' boys are pretty good) for this to be less than noticeable. Maybe not.

If, (and it's a big, if) such events were artificially generated then these round values might make more sense perhaps owing to precision calculation of the epicenter value/target solution through some sort of "Tesla-esque" or "other" means. I'm going to watch quake depths and time of occurrence for the foreseeable future and see what happens. I'm guessing quakes in geo-politically sensitive areas may have more epicenter "round" numbers than not and be nearer the surface. This "Tonga" event may have been a test or demonstration that I'm sure others around the world are taking note of.

Thanx for the info,

Victor K.

Apparently, the MSM is reporting that they have cancelled the Tsunami alert. There is no reported damage from any tsunami, so it looks like it's all clear. This time, that is. They still are not clear why some undersea quakes create tsunamis and others don't.

Aimless

That was no quake....it was....Godzilla!!!

Run!!!!!

Actually, the west coast of the United States is at the state fair right now and they are continuing to spin the wheel of fortune. They might win the giant stuffed animal before they leave, but it won't matter.

It's only a matter of time before the arrow stops on "Big One". Their prize will be death, mayhem and one hell of a bill to pay.

There is nothing that can stop Nature. Nothing.

I'm pretty clear on it: If a large volume of water is rapidly displaced by plate motion, a tsunami will result. If not, then no worries.
