Just some personal observations from my home town. People who feel they are "out of control" with a personal problem sometimes gravitate to an
organization which gives them the control--instead of going to an AA meeting, for example, an alcoholic might devote him/herself to a church with
strict rules on drinking. Some men with perversions might surround themselves with a group strongly opposed to those perversions, believing they will
overcome such perversions (or, worse, that they might not be "discovered"!) And it might not be a perversion that draws one to a certain group--a
local person ranted on and on about the evils of "government handouts", when he and his family depended on disability income. Railing against
something assuages the guilt.
