Do we have morals

What do you guys thing,

Have we become a moral less society.......

Has today's society become a society lacking morality....

Would I be able to comment that no one existly knows what it means or stands for......

the modern day morals arnt even morals, they're maid up maid up by the society we created, and a lot of people are to scared to go by the real ones.

there is a deffenition, christ's comandments: love thy neighbor as yourself and love god.

And that is the point......it is quite interesting i was having a conversation with a friend and we discussed on morals but I do agree we are a reflection of the society, if we dnt know what moral is then how can we expect others to have morals?

There is then nothing like a moralistic person as the definition is not consistent. Hence how do we judge a person to have morals?

Morals are a collective decision. Every society has different accepted standards of morality.

However, they're necessary in the evolution of society. There comes a time when it's more advantageous to the group for certain behaviors to be shunned or controled. Murder. Theft. Promiscuity and sex.

I would say that no, today's society is not lacking in morals by any means. I'll bet that people are much the same as they always have been. You don't think that there weren't murderers 100 years ago? 400? 1000? Child molesters? Wife beaters? Liars? Bigotry?

We tend to have these idealised views of the past. It's part of human nature, but it's seldom true. My great grandmother told me once that kids today were no different than in her day, just there was a lot less sticking your nose into other people's affairs, so you heard less gossip. Skirts hid more, was actually what she said. She was joking to make a point (she was a funny old lady!) but I think she was serious.

I had a Jesuit priest tell me once that religion evolved as an early form of government. Basicly, life was hard, you toiled the land for your betters, and had as many kids as your wife or wives would bare before she died, and they worked along aside of you, and every winter alot of you died. And you were told that one day, if you did as you were told, and worked hard, and did not deviate, it would all be worth it, for after you died, you'd be in paradise for eternity.

When we run into trouble is when people think that their morals are bigger, better, and handed down by a bigger, better God than your God.

Then we suffer the biggest moral lapse known to man, WAR.

Right or wrong from whose perspective?

The problem with morals is they are a cultural thing at best.
Let me give u some examples.

Here in the US it is immoral for 2 14 year olds to have sex.
In other countries, they could have been married for a year by that time.

Here, it is imoral to intentional target women,children and such, but in other countries, it happens more often than we would like to think.

Sorry to go so far off track. Yes we-no matter who the we are-have morals.
We follow them.
The problem is other people(s) have morals and they folow them too.

The real problem is that they are not the same morals!

The reason for the statment that I have made is based on the lines of the diversity. Cultural, Religious, upbringing and education play an important role in developing ones personality. I am sure external factors like life's experience + on hands experience play an important role in ones development. These all have a direct implication on ones personality. Moral's are ingredients within ones personality. One's Concious plays a critical role in testing ones morals. It is then when the above mentioned factors come into view and play a role in ones judgement. Let me give you an example. I have a friend from India and once over a nice lamb curry we were having a conversation which led in the direction of expression of love. In our western world, kissing ones wife/gf on the lip is a norm however this is not the case in india. It would raise a lot of eye brows if he did such a think even though he has been in a western country for more than 5 years. I know this is far from the point of morality, however this is an example of cultural difference to highlight the point.

I do realise that there are few in this world who understand moral and follow them. However there have been so many instances which I have noticed, like for example, I was in the train the other day, and i was lucky to have a seat during the business hour. I saw an old lady enter the train. I though of testing my patience and see what others did as there was no seat available. I waited for more than 10 minutes but no one gave their seat to her. I dnt want to be a messiah but I did offer my seat to the woman. Morally, what i did i think is correct. But did this thought even occur to others? On Easter Sunday, while in the city, with my family, i saw a woman who was pregnant and was crossing the road. She was struggling to cross the road. She was slowly making her way across, when a car waiting to take a turn yanked the horn. She did not respond, but kept going as she was struggling. I waited till she crossed the road and sat on the footpath. I was not the only one in the crowd and there were others. I just could not hold back and made my way across the road, with a bottle of water and asked if she needed any help and offered the water. She was quite grateful. My wife followed and she helped her but i was surprised that no one even went near her to ask if she was okay. We called her husband who was not that far off as she did not have her mobile on her. I was quite taken aback by the lack of concern. I think morally what i thought was a person who needed help and i was in a position to offer it which i did. I guess, i earned a brownie point in God's journal :-) however some may not consider this as a moral aspect but more of a helping an individual aspect. It can be termed as Kindness than moral.
I believe that truth depends on not one but two factors. It depends on the person who says it and the listeners [as to which extend he has the knowledge to comprehend it]

Yes, I am of the opinion that morals have taken a major backseat in the lives of many in this world.
They have declined significantly over the years, especially here in America. It's hard to see it when you're younger, but when you cross over 40 years of age, you can look back at the younger generation and compare them to your generation when it was their age and say, "yeah, major difference in morals, or lack thereof".

Morality is: The quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct.
It also means: virtuous conduct

In our world it's become "cool" to be bad, do what thou wilt, if it feels good do it, have sex with whomever/whenever you want, abortions are done without a thought, sex and soft porn are all over TV, cursing in public is everywhere, kids drop out of high school at a 50% rate, drugs and alcohol are a favorite abused recreation everywhere......look around, watch the news. bad things happen more frequently in our present society than say, back in the early 1900's through early 1960's. More murders, more muggings, more rapes, etc.

Younger people can't see the change in morals, but older folks can see it clear as a bell.

Some great points highlighted. I would like to highlight that I am 28 and it is obvious to me or maybe I am confused that morals are tough to find. I agree that education is taking a back stance. Students are dropping out of schools and university. I would not be able to quote confidently what the percentage of drop outs would be. I personally believe that education should be necessity in every society with university education the most important. The reason for me saying so is because of the exposure. University graduates are more like raw gold. They need refining and polishing to display their potential. This can only happen from in office experience.
Why do i stress so much for university experience? The reason for this is the exposure to information. Hands on experience does the same, however a person needs to be highly motivated to reach the amount of exposure university graduates acquire. I do realise that university education is quite costly, however it is essential.

Sorry to move away from the conversation, but i do believe that education plays an important role in developing moral. Though there is no reaseach to sustain my claim about higher education assisting in developing morals, however it plays a crucial role in the training process of an individual. Patiently, understanding, comprehension are few quality to which an individual gets training. I would like to stress that there are others who think otherswise, but arnt there spoilt oranges in a basket?
