with all that is going on in our government....
is it the job to protect the people from things that may hurt themselves or the other way around...

well... that's a good question. it's both.

the government's job, in modern society, is to prevent threats to national security. such a threat includes an intelligent general population, so they protect us and themselves at the same time to keep the hurtful information out of view.

then it's the job of the people to ignore that information and present that ignorance when questioned by legitimately curious entities. this will serve to protect that government while helping it to protect the people from the nasty truth.

of course im being totally cynical, but it's the law of the land. it's not right, but it's how things are right now unfortunately.

The purpose of government(of any kind) is to allocate resources and to provide for the common defence. Thats a government in a nutshell. Of course you can expand off of that but thats the 2 basic points.
