Australia's SBS Dateline Current Affairs program has broadcast footage taken by SBS photojournalist Stephen DuPont, of US Soldiers burning the bodies of two dead Taliban fighters. SBS alleges that the US Troops burned the soldiers and then used the charred remains in a propaganda campaign in Southern Afghanistan. The Taliban fighters were facing Mecca and official reports state that the bodies were burnt for hygene purposes but afterwards a message was broadcast by a US Pyschological unit over loudspeakers to other fighters in the area taunting them and telling them to retrieve the bodies and fight.

In Washington, the US Defence Department has expressed concern over the report and promised it will be "aggressively investigated".

"It is the policy of the United States, as well as the Defence Department, to treat all remains consistent with the Geneva Convention and with the utmost respect. These allegations will be aggressively investigated and, if proven to be true, the individuals will be held appropriately accountable," Mr Whitman said.

Dateline said the two Taliban fighters burnt on hills above the village of Gondaz north of Kandahar were killed by the US soldiers the night before.

The footage showed flames licking two charred corpses, their legs and arms outstretched, and a group of five US soldiers standing watching from a rocky ledge.

Footage showed two US soldiers reading two messages from a notebook that they said had earlier been broadcast.

"Attention Taliban you are cowardly dogs," read the first soldier, identified as psychological operations specialist Sergeant Jim Baker.

"You allowed your fighters to be laid down facing west and burnt. You are too scared to retrieve their bodies. This just proves you are the lady boys we always believed you to be."

The other unidentified soldier read a second message, part of which said: "You attack and run away like women. You call yourself Talibs but you are a disgrace to the Muslim religion, and you bring shame upon your family. Come and fight like men instead of the cowardly dogs you are."

Well what is going to be said about this one. if proven true this is a volcano ready to explode. What low life behaviour. One day all this is going to come flying back in the face of the US administration.

Can you say minefield?

Just saw this on SBS then. The Photojournalist who filmed it said they are trying to encourage fighting from the Taliban by taunting islam because they can't find them otherwise.

Yeah, it's very true.

Here's 2 screen grabs from the video, you can hear them talking clearly but SBS puts subtitles on everything - Don't look at it if you don't want to see burning bodies.

Ok and.....? Its WAR not twiddlywinks. But then again I suppose its ok for these insurgent fighters to plant boobie traps on corpes and and what not (And yes I am aware the majority of that happens in Iraq.) ? Sorry I'm not in the least offended by this.

I see nothing wrong with them burning the body mabe the ground was to hard to dig a grave? I know i would rather be burned than to be left in the open unburied for the scavangers to grub on.

From the transcript on the Dateline website:

Psych War in Afghanistan
This is how the Americans are now fighting in Afghanistan - loaded up with guns and loud music. The racks of speakers on top of this Humvee are a bizarre weapon dreamt up by the army's PsyOps unit - experts in psychological warfare.

The idea is that the music will flush the Taliban out of their hiding places in the mountains.

The Taliban banned music when they ruled Afghanistan so these troops are hoping that the sound of Fleetwood Mac will provoke them into an attack.

Let me tell you, playing Fleetwood Mac would inspire me to run out and attack them too.

FOR GOD'S SAKE TURN IT OFF!!!

While I don't condone (sp?) their actions... its not like this is something new and "shocking". Come on... have we forgotten the burned, beaten and dismembered bodies of US Civil Workers in Iraq? Hung from the bridge? How about when the 2 US Servicemen were dragged thru the streets in Somalia? How about the tons of explosives placed along the streets, in attempts to blow up US troops? How about the IED's put on bodies, given to children, etc?? But now suddenly two Taliban were burned and its "omg you savage americans!!". Its funny how its excusable when its not the US, but then once it IS the US, suddenly we are held to this "higher standard". How dare we right? Well if I was over there and i was getting bombed and shot at night and day, I would do whatever it took to flush out the enemy too...

Just my 2 cents...

You may believe that's what I meant, but that is definately not what I said...

You asked how would we feel if the shoe was on the other foot. My point was that the shoe has already been on the other foot, several times. This is nothing new.

As usual, your comments are entirely one sided.

Not once, in my one sentence response, did I try and defend the actions described in the article, yet you endeavor to imply that I did.

Further Updates. The US administration is very worried abou these claims. I'll say they are, this time there is video and audio evidence. names have been given. This one will be a bit more difficult for the administration to whitewash. I also feel that after this incidnt that media coverage in these areas will be further stifled. It is interesting that it is an Australian crew that reported on these events but I do predict more media blackouts.

www.news.com.au...

THE United States expressed concern today about film of US soldiers burning the bodies of two suspected Taliban militants which comes as a new blow to the image of the US military.
"From our point of view, these are very serious allegations, and if true, very troublesome," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

He said that an investigation would be held "and if there is, in fact, wrongdoing that was found, then those who are responsible for that wrongdoing will be held to account".

The United States is still struggling to overcome damage its reputation by the sexual humiliation of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and allegations of mistreatment of inmates at the Guantanamo Bay 'war on terror' camp in Cuba.

The New York Times and Washington Post said senior US officials were worried about the impact of the new video shown by the Australian SBS network's Dateline program on the US image in Muslim world.

Guess what? This whole war is based on holding Iraq to a "higher standard". Right now we're nation building, and after the WMD excuse fell through our justification for the war in Iraq was to bring them democracy so they could have our "higher standard" of civil self government.

Most people agree that policemen should be held to a higher standard of behavior than average people. Most people also beleive (and many disagree with) the fact that America right now is acting as the world police.

Well if I was over there and i was getting bombed and shot at night and day, I would do whatever it took to flush out the enemy too...

I'm glad you're not part of the US army.

Why does your "whatever it takes" attitude remind me of this girl?

News update

'Taliban burning' condemned
www.news.com.au...

PRESIDENT Hamid Karzai condemned Friday the alleged burning of the bodies of two suspected Taliban militants by US soldiers in Afghanistan, and demanded a quick US investigation into the case.
President Karzai said he had been "very much taken aback and very sorry" when General Karl Eikenberry, the top US general in Afghanistan, informed him of the allegations.
A report broadcast on Australian television station SBS on Wednesday showed footage of the bodies being burnt, which is deeply offensive to Muslims and contravenes the Geneva Convention.
"We in Afghanistan, in accordance to our religion and traditions ... are very unhappy and condemn the burning of the two Taliban dead bodies," President Karzai said.

ShakyaHeir thats a cute picture that proves nothing of my point. Should I post the various videos of American contract workers having their heads chopped off? Or their burning and bullet ridden boddies hanging from bridges? Maybe you forgot about that...

I didn't say I "CONDONE" their actions... but war is war. And show me one single SHRED of proof that states the Iraqies even WANTED democracy.

1: "I shot that man because he was robbing me"
2: "umm... no he wasn't... he didnt rob you"
3: "oh umm.. yeah.. i shot that man because... umm........."
