The thing you all are missing is that it's not only the pythons that are upsetting the balance.

Iguanas are out of hand as well. People just don't realize what they're getting into when they get a pet that gets "big". There are plenty of exotic pet stores in South FL that sell all kinds of things. Think about getting a Monitor lizard....a baby is only about foot long (if that) when it's full grown it can be over 6 foot. You have to dedicate an entire room of your house to the thing and they're not like other animals that can be trained. When they go to the bathroom they go where ever and the stink!!! OMG.

Water Monitors (and most monitors) can be picked up for about $125 bucks. So, it's appealing to people who think reptiles are cool.
