The search has not been given up. They will continue to find bodies, but they have exhausted the opportunities to find those bodies that are readily accessible. So, an active body search is not productive. The body search had three phases. Now, as people return to open places that have been locked up and as debris is cleaned up there will be bodies found and they will be dealt with by the company hired to do so. This is only to be expected. Everything that can be searched has been searched. Now the clean-up must begin.

The LA death toll has now surpassed 1,000:

BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana's official death toll from Hurricane Katrina passed 1,000 on Friday.

The state Department of Health and Human Services reported that state officials and local coroners had recovered 1,003 bodies — 15 more than the total reported Thursday.

The increase puts the death toll from the storm at 1,242. Katrina killed 221 people in Mississippi, 14 in Florida, two in Georgia and two in Alabama.
