The Nike system was for air defense. Multiple missile sites were around every major US city. The Nike network was dismantled in the late 70's.

The Nike-Ajax used conventional warheads (3 actually)

The Nike-Hercules used a low yield nuke, designed to obliterate the inbound aircraft and completely destroy possible nuclear weapons on board.

If you're interested in Nike Sites, there is a website dedicated to the location of deserted abandoned or closed Nike Sites in the United States. I drive by one every sunday on my way to church called Hernwood in Granite, MD.
