This is not the first time Iran has run a stunt like this. But even with a redesigned tail and better electronics, the 1960s era F-5 is still a low cost, and low performance, aircraft.

Erm...

If you are gonna compare to the F/A-18... then both are low performance aircaft.

Or high performance aircaft, dependant on your bias.

An F-5 with better engines will do an F/A-18. Don't be under any illusions otherwise.

No, it would not. Better engines will not give it higher Angle of Attack capability. F/A-18 has much better weapon systems anyways then any F-5 variant.

F-5 that is expertly flown can be hard to fight against, but all things being equal, a F/A-18 would have no problem with a reengined F-5.

Very nice plane, but does it fly? Do they have the skilled pilots to use a plane like that? hopefully, better then Iraqi air force. We need some competative sport. Nothing like testing new fighters against the real thing.
drones are boring. Do they have a top gun school?

Higher AoA = lost kinetic energy = sitting duck

True.

I was talking in a dogfight guns only sense.

But a weapon system is a seperate system on the aircraft - it isn't an inherent capability of the aircraft, and can be left off, upgraded or replaced as required so an argument that an F/A-18s weapon system is better than an F-5s weapon system is only valid when you specifically identify those weapon systems.
