Common Sense!!

WAIT A SECOND

I'm seeing a lot of people calling others 'idiots' for calling america a democracy... on the basis that they have some sort of 'informed' knowledge...

Well, guess what, a country can be both a democracy and a republic!

I don't mean to be snotty, but if you're going to act smart you need to get your facts straight. The terms 'democracy' and 'republic' are not mutually exclusive. Despite what some less than well-read high school teachers might say, a 'republic' is not a government wherein a few select representatives make decisions for the populace. Rather, a Republic is any type of government wherein official power is not controlled by a pre-destined branch of society (IE an aristocracy). ANY type of government with elected, instead of inherited positions, IS a republic.

A distinction between 'democracy' and 'republic' is made in the same sense that one distinguishes a car and a Volvo--- that is, a Volvo IS a car, and anyone who calls you dumb for calling a Volvo a car is actually the dumb one.

Unfortunately, many less than well thought out video games make this distinction... and so kids, who learn now through video games, think that it is real. Yes... the two aren't exactly compatible terms, but they are terms that contrast 'type' and 'species'.

It's also unfortunate that you have people talking about how this 'isn't' a democracy... Enter the dark end of the Republican Party...

And, for the record, the democrats DON'T talk about democracy to boost their party. That is the dumbest claim I have ever read.

PS and i'm a repuplican, for crying out loud

*Sigh*

The article is partially right. The united states of America is supposed to be a republic, but has been a democracy for quite some time. Gosh, How many times have I screamed this? A prophet is never accepted in his own hometown, no doubt. Read! Read what it takes to make a republic, read what it takes to make a democracy, read how we were meant to be and how it is different. See you in several, several weeks. It's taken me over ten years of study and buying expensive books, but you guys probably catch on quicker than I.

GRRRRRRRRRRRR

An equalateral triangle is a type of triangle. A democracy is a type of republic. People need to read books written by authors besides radio talk show hosts.

I don't mind OIMD's take on this.

Republic refers to where the head of state comes from.

Democracy refers to the power vested in the people to elect representatives.

But I would like TC's crash course without having to expend on more books or courses.

I'm willing to buy him a six-pack at the next ATS Convention.

Play geometry tricks,, but as I said, go read several books. West Publication has probably missed my money and needs fresh infusions of green.

To tell you, though, such posts are why I gave up on the whole "educate the citizen" thing. I don't even think we are supposed to pull the nation out of this, much less the entire world. I think we're falling right to the place we are destined to be.
Sorry for piping up. I'll go dormant again. Stick to the simple concepts such as the sport of politics.

Your last suggestion, as commanded by the motto of the ATS board, must be 'denied'.

Ok, I'm not saying I have the answer or that I'm 100% right. But take a look at this link and let's discuss whether or not it seems valid. If not then state what part is not right, and why? Good enough?

The US was created to be a democratic republic.

The US turned into a democratic socialist almost monarchy kind of un-identifiable thingamabob.

It is evolving into hell on earth I think, but I hope not.

TC,
I respect you and your posts... But you are flatly wrong. The reason I replied to this thread was because I HAVE read some books. The first thing a person learns when he embarks on the path of education is the value of definitions and clarity of concept.

A person who really loves books also loves to see them analyzed. They love to see ideas analyzed... and they DON'T like to deal only with a specified group that will accept all of their ideas without cross-checking them in the abstract. Talking about a specific press, or about how you've 'learned over ten years' is one thing... Going into a classroom, debating, and learning about the value of definitions and logic are another thing.

Sorry, but a democracy can be a form of a republic... There is no mutual exclusion. The reason 'mainstream' academics don't debate this issue is because, if you brought it up to them, they'd assume you couldn't read a dictionary.

Man, I'm sounding like a jerk lately, but.... I hate sloppiness.

Under the list of Governments I noticed something of interest:
"Etymologically-minded folks should note the difference between the suffix 'archy', meaning 'rulership', and 'cracy', meaning 'power', which both come from Greek roots."

So the fact that a "Republic" isn't in the list and also has neither 'archy' nor 'cracy' in it brings up some important questions that should be investigated.

Also no 'ism' in this list like "Communism".

So can you have a "Communistic-Republic" like a "Democratic-Republic"?

Is a "Republican-Democracy" the same as a "Democratic-Republic"?

Can you even combine 'ism's' with 'cracy's and 'archy's?

And, to the shagrin of numbskull, lazy liberals, we're a capitalist republic at that.

gorgrinder,

You are doing the same thing. You are giving the impression that two different labels have something to do with each other.

liberalism
\Lib"er*al*ism\ (-[i^]z'm), n. [Cf. F. lib['e]ralisme.] Liberal principles; the principles and methods of the liberals in politics or religion; specifically, the principles of the Liberal party.
n 1: a political orientation that favors progress and reform 2: an economic theory advocating free competition and a self-regulating market and the gold standard

Since liberal "favors progress and reform" and "free competition" & "self-regulation" which are not usually the practice of the lazy, your statement may also be incorrect.

Not to pick on ya of course....Just wanted to show we need to make sure the words we use fit the intended definitions. Or we will end up living in a Democratic-Confusionism!

This is ridiculous. Of course, everyone knew that this was a republic. However, I don't see how people have been trying to change words saying that this is democrats created democracy, trying to rub out reoublicans by denying that this is a republic and all that. Its totally silly.

It is silly to lie, unless you have no morals or conscience and are willing to lie for your own gain,at the expense of others.

Can you say POLITICS?

Are you referring to republicans? I agree too.
