The first Moldovan-Ukrainian checkpoint opened in the Transdniestrian sector of the border with Ukraine is a provocation meant to escalate tensions, the Foreign Ministry of the unrecognized Transdniestrian Moldovan Republic said on Wednesday.
"Moldovan-Ukrainian customs and border control on the border with Transdniestria, which has been pushed for with the direct support of the European Union, is an element of the comprehensive strategy of blocking, which inflicts substantial damage and gradually limits the potential of the Transdniestrian Moldovan Republic in every significant area," the ministry said.
"The unwillingness to listen to Transdniestria's arguments and the refusal to discuss this problem in the 5+2 format "are irrefutable proof of the exclusively political nature of the steps taken by Moldova and Ukraine under the cover of some international actors," the ministry said.
Moldova and Ukraine opened the first joint checkpoint in the Transdniestrian sector of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border on May 31.
The joint control will be exercised in two stages. During the initial stage, which will last for about six months, Moldovan and Ukrainian customs officers will jointly control exclusively exports of goods from Transdniestria. The Moldovan border police will monitor vehicles and passengers, register foreign citizens who cross the border in both directions, and notify interested persons of national migration laws.
The second stage will embrace control of exported and imported goods and also vehicles and passengers.

A new deal signed quietly by the government in Chisinau with the Russian operator of a power plant in Moldovan breakaway region Transnistria has worried EU observers and the Moldovan opposition.
The initial deal was signed at the end of March by Moldova’s pro-European government to buy electricity from Ukrainian DTEK Trading, owned by Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Ahmetov.
The deal replaced its usual provider, the Russian Inter Rao-operated plant located in Transnistria.
However, two months later, the Moldovan government mysteriously changed its mind and decided to buy 70 per cent of Moldova’s electricity from Inter Rao.
Krasnosselsky came back from a Moscow visit on Wednesday and admitted during a press briefing that he asked Rogozin himself to intervene and pressure Moldova into buying from Cuciurgan again.

In particular, exports of products produced in Transnistria to Ukraine increased from $51 million in 2015 to $61 million in 2016 and continues to grow this year.
Finally, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry urged Russia to stop destructive actions and finally render effective assistance to the negotiation process in the 5+2 format in the interests of the population of both banks of the Dniester River, including by observing the commitments assumed by Moscow at the Istanbul Summit of the OSCE in 1999 and withdrawing its troops from the Transnistrian region of Moldova.

"We have a military contingent there, which guards munitions depots of the former 14th Soviet army. Second, we have about 450 peacekeepers there. Now, the Moldovan authorities and security agencies are seeking to deprive us of the possibility to rotate our peacekeepers, whose term of service is expiring and who are to return home. Moldovan authorities stop Russian officials."
"It is a subject matter for a very tough talk and it looks like we will have this talks neither with Bucharest nor with Chisinau. We will speak with those who are pulling these strings," he noted.
Earlier this week, Moldova’s government declared Rogozin persona non grata and banned him to enter Moldova and cross it in transit.

Speaker of Moldovan Parliament Andrian Candu says the US Congress is ready to pass a resolution to support Moldova’s accession to the European Union and to demand withdrawal of the Russian troops from Transnistria.
The United Nations General Assembly has backed a call from Britain, Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine and seven other countries for Russia to withdraw its troops from a breakaway region of Moldova.
Russia, Iran, Armenia, Belarus, Syria, and North Korea were among the 15 countries that opposed the measure urging Russia to complete "unconditionally and without further delay the withdrawal" of its troops from Moldova.

After Transnistria's announcement that it would create a cryptocurrency of its own, a source spoke to us and said that it could be used for the breakaway region's arms deals.
During the little-known Sixth Pridnestrovian International Investment Economic Forum in the Republic Palace of Tiraspol in the breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria, the idea of a sovereign cryptocurrency was circulated that could provide the territory with some advantages.
Among those, according to the CEO of the Transnistrian “state-owned” company Tehnopark, Veaceslav Cernikevici, is the ability to quickly create supplementary income in the state’s budget using plans to “raise the consumption of energy through special equipments [sic] up to 20-25 megawatts per hour by the beginning of 2019.”
If there are arms deals pending in Transnistria, this would have a strong impact on the geopolitical stability in the regions surrounding it, including Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania.
