hi, im a newb with a couple of newb questions

1, what is an avatar?
2, How do i get one/upload etc etc

Apologies in advance as this has probably been posted several hundred times, but of the threads i did read on it, they didnt really tell me the answers i seek, only really gave info about do's and dont's.

Plus i am useless at using searches

Any help much appreciated
