Parkland students unveil sweeping gun-control proposal and hope for a youth voting surge in 2020

Media darling, David Hogg who co-founded March for Our Lives and survived the Parkland Shooting last year is back in the headlines, front-running a voter registration and gun control campaign.

The background:

The student activists who crashed the political arena after the mass shooting last year at their high school in Parkland, Fla., are throwing their weight behind a new and ambitious gun-control program that they hope will set the tone for the debate following the most recent mass shootings and headed into the 2020 elections.

It sounds like there must be some big funding behind this movement (no surprise). I'd be curious to see the breakdown of contributions from private donors versus institutional money and/or lobbying.

A bit more on the gun-control piece the group is advocating for:

Called “A Peace Plan for a Safer America,” the ambitious platform, which was obtained by The Washington Post, goes much further than the current debate over universal background checks and “red flag” laws, which would apply to people who could be a danger to themselves and others.

This gun control plan is robust, including:

  • raising the age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21
  • ban "assault weapons" and high-capacity magazines
  • create a national licensing and gun registry system
  • implement a mandatory (?) gun buyback program
  • creating a new "multi-step" gun licensing program that is overseen by a federal agency - including in-person interviews and a 10-day waiting period to purchase a firearm
  • a requirement to renew gun licenses annually
  • the creating of a Peace Corps-like organization called "Safety Corps" to address issues such as suicide, domestic violence and urban violence
  • installation of a national director of gun violence prevention, who reports directly to the president
  • and the article didn't spend much time on this one but the Red Flag laws, which have been in the news a lot lately

Quite the list. A lot of restrictions here. I found it incredible that the media is having experts say that the recent shootings (and shootings in general) are not necessarily a result of mental health issues. They want gun control and they want it on a level never seen before. Even when shootings are committed by criminals who illegally possessed the firearms, or when they occur in cities/states with strict gun control measures, the media and talking heads immediately turn to the gun control issue.

Meanwhile the major number of deaths and destruction in cities like Chicago (which has gun control) does not receive much attention in the media.

As a side note, David Hogg will be attending Harvard this fall and there has been some speculation that the academics and higher education institutions have lowered their standards for who they will accept based on political affiliations and optics. This Forbes article describes how a student with high marks and a background that would normally make him a major contender for getting into Harvard did not get accepted (likely because this particular student was involved in a scandal at age 16 where he acted very immature/inappropriate and private messages he sent used derogatory words including the N-word and were shared with the media), but Hogg, whose academic performance is much lower is being accepted (possibly due to his political beliefs): Is Harvard An Embarrassment? Part II: Kyle Kashuv And David Hogg

I thought this would be a good opportunity to discuss the gun control issue. Thanks for reading!

The left wants to make gun ownership a privilege offered by the state rather than a right afforded to all Americans.

So nope.

Sorry.

Nice, more laws for the law abiding.

You can't legislate morality!

Maybe try enforcing our current laws?

Does Hogg ever address that almost all the gun violence is in poor black communities that don't use assault rifles. Doesn't seem like he does from what I have seen and nobody calls him out on it. He should be booed off the stage for not addressing the apex of the gun problem but for some strange reason he's applauded. It's a real head scratcher for me but what do I know. I only have access to the internet and can look up facts in seconds.

He survived a school shooting, he's staying on topic.
Black lives matter do say a lot about the violence in black communities, are you not aware of this?

I survived an ambush and suicide bomber in Afghanistan and lost good friends. So what. I don't go crying about it. Even if I did, it rarely happens in the US military, just like assault rifle attacks in the US.

What he is preaching about is not the problem with guns. As tragic as what happened at his school is, the massive weight of the gun problem is not what he experienced. It's in the ER rooms of Chicago and Baltmore every single day. His message is way off target because if he could get handgun violence way down in those areas the US would not even have a gun violence problem. We'd be one of the safest countries in the world if not the safest.

Obviously if there was a law against murder none of these bad things would ever happen.

We don't outlaw guns we use Public executions for people who murder with Guns...end of story....end of guilty people getting off on publicity while they sit alive in a Jail cell....this way we weed out the freaking genetics of these people as well as keeping them permanently off the streets.

That's the exact opposite of what needs done.

We need to keep their names out of the public domain. They shouldn't get any notoriety for murder. Dont make them famous.

The Attention Hogg group is totally phony, I tried to go to one of those marches but the first problem is that they don't actually say when they are because the public is not invited. You have to sign up to participate. So they bused in a few kids then took low angle pictures to make it look like they had a big crowd, it was like 10-15 kids, and then they got them out of there before 10AM. They are a made for TV astro turf organization designed to help wag the dog on disarming Americans.

How could enforcing our current laws possibly help advance the goal of disarming law abiding Americans?

Because they are very careful to only put him on stages in front of carefully screened audiences.

And when someone buys a gun illegally and does this anyways what purpose has this served?

Can we apply these laws to voting, will they be alright with that? Yearly renewal with an in person interview, they seem to think that is good.

Um, how do the majority of mass shooters end up? Bluntone is correct on this.

Pretty much everyone survived that. Does anyone pay attention to BLM when they are not shooting cops?

but if they actually ever addressed the bulk of gun homicides which occur in places like Baltimore and Chicago and other gun control bastions then they could only conclude that the prohibition of drugs causes most murders and that legal guns are seldom involved.
