Guess what, the lease expired and China did not want to renew it.

That is actually quite untrue. Hong Kong island was permanently ceded to Britain and was not leased. China then leased surrounding areas to Britain, and HK city grew into those areas as well.

In exchange for Britain to leave and give up the land that belonged to Britain, Hong Kong was promised elections and self government. What they got was China picking candidates China liked and then 1000 people get to vote on the candidate China chooses for HK.
