I was just being facetious... that is epic. You sound like my grandparents, and now my sister. It takes a lot of acres to sustain ones self that way though. No way could city folk do that, which is why I thank god I was raised a country boy!!!!!

www.youtube.com...

You could do it all on 3 acres and a decent well. That's our footprint on where I live. We're not farmers and have no livestock, besides a few goats and a chicken coop.Almost all of my property is unimproved... just a lot of tree and beauty.

Can you please give me a few tips on how to do it the way you do. Keep in mind I live essentially in Vegas but on the outskirts. I also avoid plastic but I do have all the bills you don’t. Kinda sucks TBH

Move.

That’s the plan here soon.
Back to Oklahoma I go, screw Nevada this place sucks.

Exactly, most city slickers have 1/10th of an acre at most. Peeps just gotta reject buying crap wrapped in plastic. Or cardboard..Amazon pisses me off with all their overpacking. I can see why with damage returns and crap, but still.

Funny you said that.. I lived in Bartlesville for about ten years.

Tornadoes, freezing rain. car-sized hail, earthquakes and the occasional flash-flood. Oh!!! And 100 degree weather in the summer, -31 degrees one winter. Screw that.

You want to be self-sufficient on the cheap, think Western Montana or Eastern Idaho.

ETA... sorry for derailing the thread. I too think that the current "recycling" move is nothing but a scam. I just wish that people take a more proactive approach to their lives and the planet... instead of dropping the Starbucks container into the proper receptacle.

And the problem is that it is mandatory and requires the use of huge containers you have no room for that are picked up by specially designed and expensive diesel trucks spewing pollution into the atmosphere. You are billed for this whether you recycle or not.

Watch Blue Planet 2. We gotta do something. I am not buying anything with black plastic anymore. I know that is racist, but dammit it can't be recycled. I quit buying meat from the supermarket and butcher my own road kill. If you get it fresh it's pretty good still. Racoon and Opossum are not bad if you know how to season it properly.
All I can do is laugh at this. You butcher and eat roadkill? All I have ever seen is so damaged it's nothing but a bloody corruption of ruptured cells and blood. I can't eat Racoon even if it is killed and dressed properly. The taste is just more than I can bear. Makes me want to puke. Opossum? I don't even want to think about eating an animal that eats it's way into another dead animal and then eats it's way out.
As long as there is a meat section at the grocery, I'll let the wild game run free and live long.

Roadkill? Reminds me of Granny and the Beverly Hillbillies passing the pot with their pool cue pot passers.

In the mid 1970s people in Eugene Oregon were actually making money w/ recycling pickup from residents, and cottage industries that used recycle materials for everything from worm farms to bundling paper for burning in fireplaces and melting plastics to mold into all kinds of stuff that were sold at low prices. It worked for about one year, then the county and state told everybody these activities were against the law---we all needed a $50K to operate each little business, which really weren't making much money, but they were helping to solve the recycling problem. That destroyed the small cottage industries, and they never came back.

Once they started co-mingling recyclables in blue bins, it all went to China, where they pulled metals that could be extracted with magnets and either burned the rest or dumped it in a landfill. Yet the govt. wanted everyone to think all their stuff was being recycled right here in the USA. Once our media decided people might be interested in this development, the cover was blown and the scam was over. Moral of the story: Don't ever believe any government about anything. Democrat, Republican, Socialist or Independent--they really don't care about you, your children or the future of our planet.

Dude roadkill is a great way to get a lot of decent meat. In Oklahoma if you hit a deer and the police tell you that you can take it then you do. Same with raccoon and most other animals. Armadillo not so much because it is illegal to eat that now but......on a backroad and no one around and if you can stomach the thought. It is really REALLY good!

I wish the U.S. and other country's would make recycling a top priority. When I just think how much plastic, electronics, and construction material is being dumped into landfills, it really concerns me. The human population can't continue to bury their problems and wait until it becomes an unmanageable problem around the world.

I make a conscious decision to recycle not only to help future generations, but also because I have a deep concern for the environment. The health of this planet's environment directly affects the health and the survival of the human race. It's really sad our world leaders spend more money on weapons to destroy this planet and kill human lives, rather than having any concern about preserving it.

LOL, cmon man, that was a windup....nobody eats opossum!!!! I was thinking Beverly Hillbillies as I wrote that BTW.
While in Montana though, no joke, a car hit a deer in front of us and my boy Joel pulled over and executed the squealing bass terd, and chucked it in the back of the pickup. It was delicious.

But seriously, those black trays meat comes in is not recyclable...just saying.

The only way to get rid of plastic is to burn it but that's not environmentally practical either.

If you want to be self-sufficient you need to build the infrastructure to do it.

Weather that occasionally destroys all your infrastructure, to me, is not the way to go.

I do admit, in the back of my mind I sometimes think about the possibility of something bad happening. Social unrest, EMP badness, loss of the power grid, even down to something as little as losing your job. I was crippled once for awhile and lost everything.

Any of that happens now and I'm just fine. Or at least have a lot better shot at this thing we call life.

An opinion, as always.

In Montana now if you hit a critter, you just butcher it and the next day fill out the tag online.

I have friends now with well drill casing front brush guards. For the occasional Elk.

Or a Moose. Although they normally write off a truck so that may not be a good tradeoff. Moosemeat is the bomb though, and Blackbear is good as well.

I ate some Beaver once and I gotta tell ya, it was lip-smackin delicious.

But see, wild critters don't require plastic. See how this works.
