If we had these almost 50 years ago, wouldn't it be relatively simple to design something that has similar performance but just hits a stationary or slow-moving target on the ground instead of going after another super/hypersonic missile? Seems like it should be easier, wouldn't it?

Obviously they're much shorter range than you'd want for a cruise missile, so you'd have to scale it up. Is that the sticking point?

Sorry for my admittedly uninformed question. I'm completely out of my element here.

But those are not cruise missiles. The problem with a CM is it needs to do low level, long range, sustained flight. The range for a sprint was ... 25 miles. More or less.

Wonder how Russia & China will respond once we get our hypersonic industrial base up and going.

Russia may not do a whole lot more. They're stretched thin as it is with all their wunderwaffe with their budget.

China, otoh, is probably already started their response.

Probably to start the development cycle in the next one.

The effort involves the use of digital engineering and model-based engineering practices for requirements, design, trade studies, and analyses,” says the service.

Soooo they will be using Solidworks,Cosmosworks and then 3D print the model :-P

Well, looks like 0050 gets to join Balls 8 with a TFHB mission marking. It appears that HAWC accidentally separated from the aircraft during a flight over the range.

Does anyone have any details? Where and when did this happen?

I haven't seen any solid details. They said that they believe it was over either China Lake, or the Precision Impact Range. According to the article they recovered what was left after impact.
