Cryptic emergency alert panics Oregon city's residents

Oregon's emergency alert systems blasted a cryptic alert to cellphones around the capital city, panicking residents by telling them simply "Civil Emergency" and "Prepare for Action" and leaving off that the threat was toxic algae at a local water supply.

Officials wanted to warn Salem-area residents Tuesday night that elevated levels of a natural toxin caused by the algae bloom had made area tap water unsafe for children and people with compromised immune systems. But that information got cut off, and a more ominous-sounding default message went out in its place, said Andrew Phelps, head of the state emergency management agency.

Officials sent a second message 31 minutes later with more information and a link to a municipal website.

The alert was for water toxicity. Blue algae was found in the lake that supplies water to various cities, the largest being Salem. Warning that anyone will illnesses, immune system ailments, pregnancy, and children under 6 to not drink city water.

DO you buy that?

Would one start off an alert about an algae bloom in the water with "CIVIL EMERGENCY!" and "Prepare for action" ???

Indeed.
And they just happened to leave out the part about the blue algae in the water.... the important facts.
Sure does seem weird.

Indeed I do buy it. I live in the area. There was/is nothing nefarious about what happened. Trust me, it was the first thing on my mind when the alerts came in.

This line in the article

The actual algae alert was replaced with a generic message is what I get from that.

Truth? Who knows at this point. There have been so many glitches in the alert systems in the US and even Japan that one has to wonder if these glitches are intentional to gauge public reaction.

Yes, that's what I am wondering. I suppose it could just be that more cities are using more and different alert systems, so the incidence of glitches would rise....could be the explanation. Or one explanation, other than gauging public reaction.

But this is a conspiracy theory site.....I think something is up with all of the "glitches."
