according to the story, the CIA paid 100k for dirt on Trump.

I haven't read the NYT article yet but I just finished reading one from James Risen at The Intercept. And it doesn't appear there is any involvement of the FBI or DOJ. It's the NSA and CIA.

It also doesn't sound like they wanted to touch the Trump-related material based on Risen's sources. Risen if you'll remember is the Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist (his Pulitzer was for uncovering an NSA surveillance program) who was targeted by both the Bush and Obama administrations.

They say the same thing in the NYT article. They were after hacking tools.

and yet....you ONLY said trump in your title...not hacking tools or means and methods....and the "trump" part was not the main reason

if I was a spook in one those agencies and I was privy to Russian interference in our elections, I would be trying everything I could to find out the "who and what"....why is trying to find out about Russia hacking our elections is somehow construed as bring un-patriotic....and how can Hillary conspire with Russia to lose the election and have trump win...are you logic impaired?

To the contrary. They shut down negotiations when they fellow tried bait and switch.

He offered them a summary of what NSA tools had been stolen and then tried to pitch them on Trump material...Including a teaser 15 second clip of video that someone claimed was Trump and hookers.

Once they realized the guy was pitching Anti-Trump Material they told him Eff Off.

The most fascinating things about this whole story is that they refused to accept intelligence that might be damaging to Trump.

Early in the negotiations, for instance, he dropped his asking price from about $10 million to just over $1 million. Then, a few months later, he showed the American businessman a 15-second clip of a video showing a man in a room talking to two women.

No audio could be heard on the video, and there was no way to verify if the man was Mr. Trump, as the Russian claimed.

It would be worse than "un-patriotic" if as an intel agency they knew
the truth and twisted it to fit their own political ends.

Also the use of the word "hacking" is not really the best description
of what may have happened. The better description is "interfered"
or "influence". As far as we are told by the officials, there were
no votes changed, right?

She had every intention of winning, especially considering how much

Yep. A down payment on 1M for a list of exactly what cyber tools Russia stole from NSA.

When the guy never provided that material and instead tried to pitch Trump Kompromat, they told him not interested.
They then tried to just hammer him. Either give up your whole network or eff off.

A) people looking to cash in with forging intel material to sell to gullible Political Operatives and CIA
B) or it is Russia trying to sow division and stoke the US Intel vs. Trump division or
C) Russia trying to chum the waters with fake material to obfuscate any real intelligence that might surface

Or various combinations thereof.
