Or better yet, how about Somalia?

The pirates would be all over that thing like white on rice...

I'm sure it's being test in Coronado and Hawaii or anywhere really in the Pacific I mean if it's within range of a battle group...

1 - no it is not - a trimaran is one of the most stable hull forms availiable

2 - a large % of the cost is the underlying tech to run an autonomous naval platform [ which will be " recooped " as the use of them increases

3 - no they wont [ they are outriggers - not sides ] and please cite ANY previous incident of a trimeran loosing an outriger due to seastate

Haha. Hardly. I get a back of the truck sort of education that is fine on the general idea, but scarce on the particulars on most anything uniquely naval. General "you might find this thing we're doing interesting" stories shared on the way here or there. If it floats or sinks, it is not my bag! It's just funny because I was just happened fo be out in that neighborhood a few months ago and saw it tied up and got the short story point of interest "brief".
The FLIP ship is usually tied up across the way there, so that's what I had actually asked about when I got the story about DARPA and ACTUV -- which I had seen over there and was vaguely aware of as a program, but didn't recognize. Just down the way is the Marine Mammal Program which you can frequently see out training and jetting back and forth. Nobody who talks about it "knows" anything, but they all have interesting "rumours" haha

Chinese already tried to steal at least one towed array a few years ago. That's scarier than Somalis!

Zaphod,

Why wouldn't the Navy resist unmanned systems?

Is it just manpower = empire or is there a deeper reason?

Yes because boats haven't used outriggers for literally as long as there's been boats or anything...

But you'd probably know this if you knew anything about boats...

*The sides are going to rip off* *rends hair and gnashes teeth*

Congratulations, it was people LIKE YOU not scientists who said man would never fly, and why you're only about 2000 years behind the curve on naval architecture in this case!

Institutional inertia. They've always done things manned, so they're more effective manned, so they're going to stay manned.

I can see that. Thanks.

Maybe they should try 'regime change'!

The entire Pentagon needs to be razed, preferably while in use, and started over.

Some would say whoa zaphod aren't you being a little harsh here?

But you're really not. This place, and pretty much every other bureaucracy, is so ridiculously overstaffed that they can't do anything but fail!

It's like giving someone with 87 iq points a nuclear reactor and expecting anything but disaster at this point.

The people that haven't gotten their mandatory lobotomy might be worth keeping around, but there aren't many of them left in that hell hole.
