Update from the guardian.

The French interior minister, Gérard Collomb, said the driver of the car was killed in what he described as “an attempted attack” on a convoy of police vehicles driving down the avenue.

Collomb said two handguns, an AK47 assault rifle and a gas canister were found in the car. An interior ministry spokesman, Pierre-Henry Brandet, said bomb disposal experts were at the scene.

No other injuries, including to the police officers inside the van, were reported in the ramming, which a police source told BFM TV resembled a “kamikaze attack”.

Best laid plans of mice and men, etc. Perhaps he was hoping to catch the van by surprise, then hop out and unload into it before the police could react. He might have overestimated his own ability to recover from the impact quickly, or underestimated how quickly the police could respond.

People tend to imagine that life is like a movie. In the movies, you can ram into another car at high speed, shake your head for a second or two, then carry on as if nothing happened.
