It's been happening slowly:

"Human-rating ‘Peeple’ app launches despite massive backlash"

The ‘Peeple’ app is being billed as a Yelp type service for humans, which means that you’re essentially able to leave listings for people, and more crucially, rate them.

It’s now available to download on the App store, but concerns have been raised about the implications of it, with some saying it could ‘ruin innocent lives.’

metro.co.uk...

That was my favorite episode btw

In regards to that Reldra thread, lol.

I remember catching one of the top rated members mentioned mid way through page one of Reldra's thread talking to their sock puppet and most likely trading stars. Looks like they were trying to bring up their self worth, the nosedive was deep.

It was an epic meltdown but they recovered quickly thanks to a quick edit.

I sure wish I saved that screen shot.

Too bad that girl in that episode didn't have an edit button!

... even just having friends with a low score in your social network will lower your score.

teehee. I can see it now. I get a PM from a popular ATS member requesting "would you please remove my name from your friends list? It's lowering my social worth score".

The shed thread is where people looking for friends go, and I avoid.
Consider it a safe space.

*edit*
If you want stars just post some lame poetry in The Shed thread then you'll get them a plenty, as well as pictures of dragon cookies or similar on your ATS joining date anniversary.
I personally don't give a # about that stuff myself.

Well that was kind of harsh.

When I first joined here I didn't come to make friends either. I came for the conspiracy theories.
Over time, I made friends here...great friends, who have done more for me than anyone in real life.

The Shed has survived for over 3 years now. Obviously there is a need/want for it here.
Of course you don't have to participate, but you also don't have to insult those of us who do.

Wookiep...Great OP, though you had me at "conundrum" (fave word right now).

Well you are insulted easily.
I didn't call the shed a mutual appreciation jerk circle.
And my reply was pretty much factually correct. ATS anniversaries get pictures of dragon cup cakes and you all congratulate each other.
I didn't criticise it per se, I stated that I am not interested in it.
And yeah, crap poetry gets stars in the shed so my comments were on target.
Unfortunate if that upsets you, I'm no "sheddite" and have no aspirations to join your love in.
Unlucky if that upsets you, I've never wanted to join your club.

Yes I am.

The Shed was a fictional story that I wrote. That's all...just a story (that became a collaboration).
It morphed into what it is now, and 3+ years later it's still alive.

None of the participating members write exclusively in that one thread. Most are involved in various topics and often people just stop in to chat when they're lonely or bored.

It's not a club or a circle jerk.
Perhaps a support group. Be thankful if you don't need one.
Some of us are dealing with serious issues in real life and have no support group IN real life.

So yeah, I'm offended.
I had always respected your contributions here.

Carry on enjoying your thread where like minded people interact together.
My comments here don't affect your options.

I have replied to you in one of your own threads. (Human interaction stuff that makes you smile)
Seemed rather ironic.
Apologies to OP.

No worries Jacy. It seems there is a connection with the convo you two have been having that does relate to the OP in a strange way. I appreciate you being in this thread.

Thank you for your kind words, Wookiep!!

Now that I'm not all hot under the collar, hehe...I would like to respond to your original post.

I think the "name your favourite member" thread was a little hurtful to a lot of people.

Can't believe you wrote "conundrum" and "Scooby snack" in the same paragraph, lol. (Are you my long lost sibling?)
To me the stars here have multiple meanings. Approval of either a post or the member, support for what has been written, or a thank you for replying.
Some people think it's a popularity thing and sometimes it can look/feel that way.
Often it's a pat on the back from a lurker who doesn't respond but enjoys what you write.
A lot of funny banter between members can garner a whole whack of stars...this place can get a little depressing at times and we can all use a laugh to counter the doom porn.

That show itself sounds like something I would enjoy, but I don't have access to Netflix right now.
We have become an approval-seeking society though.
Just look at all the people who have online accounts with thousands of "followers"...posting selfie after selfie..."look at me!!" and "like me!!" (but they don't really do anything, they're famous for nothing)
Ugh.

I don't like that mentality and I think it's really unhealthy. At least here we can find like-minded individuals and discuss topics of interest. I came here to find all the answers...not to make chit-chat. But when my reality changed in real life and I found myself laid up for long periods of time...chit-chat became more of a priority. By that time I had already made a few friends by participating in various threads, and also began writing short stories.
(I had also realized that I was never going to have "all the answers", so I might as well enjoy my time spent here)

Awesome op, very though provoking!
S&F (hehe....)

I'm not into cross pollination of threads so I'm replying here because the conversation is relevant to the OP.
The Shed thread is a cozy tea room for like minded members and clearly my expressed lack of interest in joining has influenced your opinion about me.

I haven't insulted anyone, I said that posting crap poetry is a sure fire way to get stars or gif images of dragon cookies.
The relevance to this thread is the clique or group mentality of "sheddite's" as you call yourselves compared to non sheddite's.

I have no problem with people forming online groups in a discussion forum but I reserve the right to express an opinion. Your outrage and anger is a good example of the future where merely stating that one does not wish to join a group is in itself a crime.

And as far as respecting posts goes, I look at all posts individually and agree, flag, or star as appropriate.
You may be influenced by emotions over one particular view point but I am not. I star and agree with members who I don't like at all if I agree on a different specific issue.

If you are implying that because I've not been positive toward your shed thread that you will 'not respect' my future posts, well such an attitude simply reinforces the thoughts in the OP.

It's the same cookie image every time.
Waste of bandwidth if you didn't actually cook them yourself.
Just my opinion, you may get a warm fuzzy feeling inside when someone posts a generic stock dragon cookie image.
I don't.

No one has to be a 'non-sheddite'. We always welcome new people with open arms. We also give shout outs to lurkers to stop lurking and tell them to feel free to join in. There is no clique. Throughout 14 Shed incarnations, you will see a welcome in the opening pages. You will see shout outs for people not to be shy and requests for them to join in. It stayed alive for a few years for a good reason. Friendships are made and it is a wonderful diversion from the mundane and chaos of the world. Many have called it their sanctuary. Many have thanked God for the place and the people there. Many are going through difficult times in their lives and The Shed helps them to get through that.

It is not about being a clique, nor is about stars and flags. Not ever!

Now about those dragon cookies...I got that pic from Syx and Lone got the pic from me, I often use them in Birthday and Anniversary threads for people. It is put there to bring a smile. I don't need stars and flags, but I do enjoy bringing a smile when I can by posting them.

As for stars and flags, Jacy explained that quite clearly and I agree.

Do whatever you like, I only challenge those who get a broken heart about people who don't positively promote The Shed thread.

Jacy, like myself and others at the shed are very sensitive souls who are filled with love and compassion. There is so much that went into the creation of that place. A lot of love, humor, compassion, folks sharing joys and sorrow etc. People come and go and new people come and add their own special magic. We don't need promotion, but I don't understand why anyone would disapprove and look down on us. So I guess it is insulting when someone tries to make it something that it isn't, like a special clique. That is the only way I can express my feelings on this. And...we love dragons with a passion and other magical and mystical creatures. We love our dragon cookies and coffee too.

I don't believe in souls or dragons.
Enjoy your thread where people who do can talk about such things, but getting butt hurt when someone has an opinion alternate to your sheddiite view indicates a clique to me.
Nothing I have posted prevents you from continuing to enjoy your thread, but your reactions to my posts indicate thought police.
Exactly as the OP describes.

You seem to be the one who is upset. You could have just said that it wasn't the kind of thing you liked but you had to edit that other part in that was a snide remark. You can be negative and critical if you want but some people may be offended and say something back.
