And why does that bought have such BIG windows on the side?

Here is some information regarding this FAC

The PLA Navy has launched a new missile fast attack craft (FAC) based on a unique wave-piercing catamaran hull with apparent stealthy features. The vessel, carrying the pennant number 2208, was first seen in Qiuxin Shipyard, Shanghai in April 2004. No further building of similar vessels has been identified so far. The boat 2208 might merely serve as a technical demonstration platform, based on which new concepts and technologies could be tested.

The most unique feature of the boat 2208 is its wave-piercing catamaran hull design, which provides both high speed performance as well as good stability. When travelling at a high speed, the water-piercing body lifts the hull up above the water surface to reduce the resistance of water. The vessel is therefore virtually ‘flying’ on the water surface. At the same time, the much wider catamaran hull is much more stable comparing to the conventional single-hull design, which will be an advantage for the operation of weapon systems and sensors.

Boat 2208 seems to be derived from similar civil wave-piercing catamaran high-speed boats build by the same shipyard. Qingxin may have learned considerable experience from the building of these civil boats. The boat 2208 is likely to be an ambitious adventure by Qingxin shipyard. Should it becomes successful, this design will certainly bring a revolution to the design of modern FACs.

The boat 2208 represents some new concepts in the future tactical principles of the PLA Navy. While investing heavily on the building of a ‘blue water’ fleet capable of fighting far from shore, the PLA Navy is probably testing a new tactic of using a large number of high-speed, stealthy FACs carrying long-range anti-ship cruise missiles to launch sudden strikes against surface targets. Additionally, the vessel could be used in together with sea-based, airborne, and space-based sensors to form a wider networked platform and sensor grid. This network might prove particularly effective in offshore shallow waters such as Taiwan Strait.

No details on the weapon systems and sensors onboard boat 2208 is available. Judging from its appearance, the vessel probably carries four anti-ship missiles and one Russian AK-630 30mm close-in weapon system (CIWS).

What are the ranges of these FAC...and what kind of armaments do they carry?..

I wouldnt put too much pressure for seeing Chinese navy fleet, they take over ship industry with low prices and build unsafe, non EU sea travel standard tankers for example, maybe in 20 years China has more experience in ship building. I wouldnt wanna go ship with no safety standars on, can be certain this wouldnt qualify on such either, anyway catamaran is good concept for future ships. Just dont recruit me as crew member.

"The Chinese navy has developed a new stealthy trimaran fast attack craft (FAC) design. It will probably grow into a larger more versatile platform, similar to the U.S. Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program. The use of advanced trimaran hull shows that the Chinese are able to incorporate advanced European and Australian fast ferry technology a bit faster than the U.S., as American programs to use these ships and this hull technology are only in the design and experiment stage. While the U.S. did use some Australian designed fast ferries in the 2003 Iraq invasion, the U.S. does not have ships coming off the lines, like the Chinese do. On one level, this new FAC is a Chinese program to replace old conventional hull designs, and to exceed the capabilities of Taiwan's new stealthy FAC design. The trimaran hull configuration confers greater high speed capability in heavy weather, while providing a large deck space for multiple uses.

This first ship appears to be focused on the FAC mission, and appears to be designed for the installation of anti-ship missile launchers amidship (in the middle of the ship). But we can safely expect that the Chinese will soon design and build larger models that can carry UAVs and small boats for landing commandoes, as the U.S. may soon be doing. The Chinese will probably already have its version of the digital connectivity which lies at the heart of the LCS program. So here we have an area of military technical competition in which the Chinese are demonstrating creativity and a potential ability to match the U.S. just as it is embarking on a new direction in naval warship and combat tactics modernization.

The new Chinese FAC design also demonstrates that the real naval threat from China is not aircraft carriers and large destroyers bought from Russia. No, the real threat is quiet diesel submarines and small ships like this new FAC. The real potential of this new design would be its use in co-ordination with their diesel subs and, possibly, theater ballistic missiles with precision guidance. A combination like that could enable the Chinese to deny the U.S. Navy the ability to safely move in some vital areas, such as the waters surrounding Taiwan."

Apparently the article is outdated because there are several confirmed in service 220X already and obviously there are more under construction. No it is not just a technology demonstrator but it is also under mass production as 4 just rolled out in the last three month.

The windows I believe are vents to release the exhausts from the launching of its ASCMs.

The ship looks sweet, totally stealthy, fast, and sexy.

Those aren't the only things that China is building. 115 and 116 are undercontruction with confirmed pics. 5 Yuans are under construction, confirmed pics not PSed. 527 just rolled out, but its not of the Type 054 class. China will sign deal with Russia to purchase 40 Tu-22M3. .......... theres more but I'm hungry so I'm not gonna write it down, its just so muched stuff.

I believe the ship is armed with 8 YJ-83s and current plans is the new ASCM China is developing with Raduga (superior to sunburn, not sure about yahkont).
