One of my programs, I dont know which one as I have not been able to isolate it yet, has been resetting my win 7 SP1 update settings back to default which is auto download and install so the computer has been doing automatic up dating.

Today I notice there are some new thingys in the control panel, Voice Recognition, remote and desktop connections, Windows card Space, Windows anytime upgrade, Location and Other sensors and Credential Manager, all big brother stuff.

How can I find out which updates installed these things so I can delete them as I want them out big time, ASAP.

thanks for all help.

use the restore function, turn off updates and be more vigilante.

Microsoft has an update page (sorry I'm mobile and suck linking) it list all of its updates and what they do. It sucks reading through it though so good luck. I have to use it at work to approve updates for my WSUS server. A search should find it.

Those are some scary updates.

I am rather impressed your computer still does the updates.
Both of ours locked to the point I turned updates off....and from the looks of those you mention, I'm glad.

Sounds like they are trying to make Win7 more like Win10.

ETA
However, when I could still do updates, I would focus on the Security Updates....and would read what the others were trying to "fix"
Good luck.

Just completely disable updates on Win 7. Turn them off. I have had Windows updates completely disabled on my remaining Win 7 machine for about 18 months now. You will be fine. Use an antivirus, Malwarebytes and CCleaner. Keep antivirus updated and run Malwarebytes and CCleaner as often as you like and you will be good to go. I know that recently Microsoft did add some telemetry and tracking things to Win 7 that were previously only on Win 10 so that's what it sounds like you have going on.

I have 8 total Windows machines that range from running Win 7 to Win 10. The only ones that update are the windows 10 machines. I have used some tweaks and registry hacks to disable as much of the telemtery and other invasive things on them as I can. My gaming rig is on 8.1, I refuse to upgrade it to 10 and I have updates completely disabled on that one as well. I will occasionally manually download a specific update if I have a reason to but the machine itself has had it's updating ability completely stripped from it. Its a 4 grand machine, I wouldn't take chances with it, there have been no issues with having updates disabled.

most often computer manufacturers will have their own software set run automaticly to update specificly for a particular model, usually it's mainly for hardware drivers but it can include Windows Updates. sounds like some of the new items in your control panel might be driver related...

If you turned off Windows Automatic Updates and it keeps getting turned back on, i'd check the settings of any Anti-Virus/Malware/Security software you might have, alot of those will have settings to prevent Windows Automatic Update from getting turned off.

otherwise it's a conspiracy, windows purposely obfuscates what an Update will do...

Some these updates may be associated with preparing for your eventual Windows 10 Upgrade

Never10-Control Windows 10 upgrade

Then there's that... Slow Windows 7 Update scans

Disable Window Update Service

thanks for that.

I have gone through:

Advanced system care
AVG
CCCleaner
IOBit malware fighter
Spybot

and both AVG and Avast when i had them, but I could not find any setting that turn updates back to default status.

I cant afford it to go as I can see my computer getting smahed with win 10 so I will slowly uninstall these kinds of programs to find the culprit and when I do I will smash it into one million pieces.

I found this list of KBs to uninstall as they relate to telemetry or are otherwise not needed. I restarted after taken those out that were in my system and only one or two of the unwanted things were in the My Computer list.

WINDOWS 7-8 TELEMETRY & WINDOWS 10 PREPARATION. DO NOT INSTALL NOT NEEDED. Sorry i dont have the link

I think we should keep our eyes out for lists of these KBs to take out because they are harmful or are not needed by us.

Keeping such a list updated would help many people I think.

cheers

OK, so I have attached a couple threads for you from a community of people I am part of and trust very much. They have a lot of info in them but will be very helpful. The first thread is your main concern regarding Windows updates. It is updated and if you read through it it even points out how MS actually changed the names or KB # of some updates and brought them back as recommended updates. Dirty.

The 2nd is just in case you ever decide to upgrade to 10 or buy a new computer at some point with 10 on it. 10 isn't bad, it actually runs very nice. It's just the telemetry and auto updates that are issues. The telemetry and spying can all be disabled so the 2nd thread will help if you are ever using 10. As I stated I have 10 on a few machines, I have made my hacks and registry changes and disabled everything I didn't like. Except on the Surface, I left it stock Win 10 and it's pretty nice. Good luck.

I don't recommend turning off updates. You can certainly change update behavior - you can make it so only important updates are installed, rather than recommended, which is where a lot of that comes from. Hacks often target zero-day vulnerabilities, and if you don't patch.. you will have a lot of those on your computer.

You can also go into add-remove programs, installed updates, and remove particular updates you don't want on your computer. You do probably want many of your updates. Here is link to a great post from a team that used to update Windows 7 updates as they occurred, and whether they were good, or just bloatware / telemetry, etc.

Windows 7 Updates

As you can see from that list, most updates are actually useful, correcting Windows issues, or patching security holes. By not updating, you are not just putting yourself at risk, but also causing other Windows issues that have been fixed by MS over time.

Both Free versions.

HOWEVER.

Tweaking all in one windows repair.

Follow the onscreen guide will reset windows updats.

Then selection let me choose when to install.

You can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free. It's far better than Windows 7.

Thanks for your reply, can you confirm that Advanced system care only downloads security updates?

Thanks for all the info

Pretty sure it did.

When it's running the scans and under the security hole scan.

Thought I saw it downloading MS security updates.

Yesterday I did a clean install.

When to MS and downloaded the USB install tool.

To now my system has just the original windows and sp1.

That's it.

The rest is Commodo Internet security/Advanced System Care Pro version. I paid the $23 bucks, and used the options to secure from trojans, and malware.

The last thing I did was download Kasperskys Standalone Virus scanner KVRT.

Pretty lean system now.

No password login anymore.

I've had/got a dozen and one tools for keeping my computer clean and still get problems about crapware. I have thought of getting rid of most of them and doing something like you've done. I will be interested to hear how your system functions over the coming months.

I've got Advanced System Care Pro from giveaway of the day a few times and it does seem to be ok. Its supposed to clean up a lot but every registry cleaner i use always seems to find a heap of stuff.

Downloading nothing but security updates looks very attractive to me as I've left my computer running over night and its still searching the next day. I have down loaded the fix KB but I get error messages saying I must has Win 7 SP1 which I've got.

Really depends on what kind of user someone is.

Like a high risk user.

Torrents,porno etc.

Compared to those with less risk.

Windows updates for me caused more problems that they have ever solved.

When none even exist.

Between a cable mode,/router with firewall. Software Firewall/Antivirus and some good malware scanners like Malabytes.

Although.

Your IT is your call.

Do what your comfortable with.
