I was brought up to believe that home improvement was a euphemism for money/time pit!
You were brought up by very wise people.
I was brought up with the "American Dream" - you begin with a 'starter home', then trade up and trade up again until you are in a manse
extraordinaire.....
that dream has died. Still in the "starter home" - expect to die here.
In fact, the first time my husband and I bought a home, we got a Sympathy card from his brother. I kid you not.
Nowadays, I tell people "home ownership" is no where near what it's cracked up to be (American slang for 'peddled as', I guess). It IS a money pit,
and a constant frustration. But - it's the only 'estate' I have. When we spend money on it and fix it up, that doesn't just vanish into thin air.
It's still fixed up.
I'll still have a place to live, you know. Even if I starve to death inside....it has a fireplace, so I won't freeze (living on a wooded lot - we have
shade, too against the extreme heat) or melt. We have somewhere to lay our heads. Just a pity that the bank could try to evict us. "Try" being the
active word there....
lol!!!
(My home is my 'hot-rod' - it is an expression of myself, a giant piece of unique art....)
