Thirty years ago, the doors swung shut, during the Reagan administration...

Exactly the opposite. Reagan began the great immigration wave we are faced with today.

You know the guys who just basically don't want a "lazy" Mexican doing their garden or a "suspicious" Muslim teaching their kids and so on.

While I'm ok with the "lazy Mexicans" doing whatever...I wouldnt want a "suspicious muslim" teaching my kids. It has to do with cultural values at which we are not seeing eye to eye and I dont want my kids to be potentially exposed to some backwards dogma. For the same reason...I dont want christian or any other faith classes anywhere near schools, unless it's an optional class.

So I guess I'm in the racist camp.

The real issues with ILLEGAL immigration.

First, it's an important distinction.

Trump supporters, for example, aren't against immigration.
We're against taxpayer benefits and citizen benefits for ILLEGAL immigrants.

Typically, this is done by proxy through the "anchor baby" syndrome. Illegal immigrant comes here, has a kid, that kid is now a citizen by birth (a ridiculous concept, and one fairly unique to the US), and eligible for benefits. The illegal then has MORE children to increase the monthly benefits rolling in...ad nauseum. That we are all paying for. Now illegals do pay SOME taxes (sales tax), but this is a MAJOR hemorrhage of money here.

Then, you have states like California that says, "Hey, lets give illegals drivers licenses and allow them to vote!"
WHAT??? Seriously?

So yeah, maybe one can understand why we're a little ticked off, and feeling a bit betrayed by our leadership. All the while, we're called "racist" for feeling this way. Really? Has nothing to do with it! Doesn't matter if they are from Mexico, any of the Asian nations, or anywhere, it's the problem we're ticked about, not the people, and not dependent on race/ethnicity, etc.

More shut down arguments from regressive liberal agenda. I have to be racist and right wing. How is ATS the most racist website? is it because people disagree with you so they're obviously racist? more regressive left dialogue so you don't have to listen to different opinions

Special edit, while CA did allow them Drivers Licenses, they do NOT then entitle them to vote, this all stemmed from an incorrect part of an article that was later retracted.

But, to be clear, the issue isn't with jobs, it's with illegals obtaining benefits through the "anchor baby" method, which amounts to hundreds of billions of dollars in aid every year.

Is the real issue with immigration the fact that we have to many people or the fact that we shipped all of our jobs overseas?

The real issue with immigration is that it's used by the politically unintelligent to pander to the bigotries of the low-IQ voter. It's a simple tool, a blunt one, used by extremes in politics to ratchet up support.

Every nation on Earth has at least one politician or party pandering to the xenophobe for votes. It's tribalism of the worst kind, encouraging people to believe that everything would be fine if they just "got rid of all the foreigners".

Trump and his ilk use groups of people as scapegoats and nothing more. They pick a target (sometimes foreigners, sometimes LGBT people, sometimes Jews - sometimes anyone who doesn't fit the stereotype of the voter they want to sway) and they feed them this bs to convince them they this guy is the one who is going to fix everything by getting rid of that one "problem".

Here is what would actually happen if Trump were to be elected and did go after the immigrant...

Most of your food produce would double in price within a month. Why? Because almost all of it is produced and transported within the USA. But because you all want to eat (and waste) masses of food every day and you want to pay almost nothing for it, you need an army of people willing to work for the absolute minimum in RURAL communities and along the delivery line.

Aside from the fact that these rural communities don't have a workforce outside of the immigrant willing to do that job for almost nothing, no other Americans want to do those jobs for that pay all along the production line. If they did, they would be doing it and all those farmers and ranchers and processing plants would not be hiring immigrants to do it.

The work is there, it's always been there, the reason immigrants come to do it is because IT'S THERE AND YOU GUYS WON'T DO IT YOURSELVES.

So, what happens when that workforce is gone?

Who is going to do that work?

Go on, say Americans.

They won't. Or at least the majority of those jobs will not be done.

Any that do decide to work for almost nothing will then be demanding higher wages - as they have been for the last two years in retail and manufacturing all over the US.

The consumer demands low prices, the only way to keep those prices low is to pay people less to do those jobs, and even with the situation as it is now those producing are struggling (you can thank the contracts they're forced into by your retailers for that little treat).

There is no getting away from this reality. The only reason you can eat (and waste) as much as you do for the prices you pay is thanks to the immigrant workforce in your country. If you get rid of them, well, good luck, you're gonna need it.

So what's the real issue is it immigration or jobs?

1. The 3 biggest benefactor of illegal immigration are 3 powerful lobbying groups (Agriculture,Construction,Hospitality. ) . They spend a lot of money to get the public distracted and focused on measures that will not impact illegal immigration.

2. American Agriculture,Construction, and Hospitality industries are giving illegals incentive to come here and work. In return the American companies get a compliant cheap slave labor workforce with no voice to demand workers rights, benefits or even minimum wage.

3. Fix ( Really simple):
Take away the incentive for illegals to come here for work. Fine each company or business 50K for each illegal they hire. If they have no incentive to give them a job they will have no incentive to come here.

Much the same reason why Canadians don't come to the US illegally for work that pays below their living standards. No Great Wall is needed.

4. Consequence of getting rid of illegals:
Our economy is engrained with illegals and the impact to the Agriculture,Construction, and Hospitality industries would be so big that it would severely impact our economy.

So the real issue is:

3 large lobbying industries are benefiting from illegal workers and our economy has become too engrained with them to stop it without crashing our economy.

The American public benefits from the lower prices within those industries due to a cheap illegal work force. However the American public looses the luxury of getting paid a liveable wage and benefits from jobs related in those industries. Its not that American are to lazy to take those jobs , its that they can't afford to compete with a third world work force and still provide for their family.

In essence lies from all sides and politicians trying to capitalize on a virtual crisis and not treating the American people like adults by stating the truth.
