Just like your OP, her voice was like listening to someone scratch a blackboard.

Miss Peters managed to show all what is wrong with religious folks

Superfrog managed to show all what is arrogant with some holier-than-thou science folks.

Tell you what, get on your podium and film a youtube clip when you have nailed anti-gravity or developed a workable alternative to fossil-fuels that actually helps mankind.....or at the very least is impressive.

Nailed? She nailed nothing.

Good to know since it contradicts a bit what you posted earlier

Oh, tanks to notice my mistake - should say 'with religious extremes', but you already knew what I meant, didn't you?

Now, let's cover this, as it is clear product of people brainwashing kids and pushing their (religious) agenda(s) as in opening post example:

www.nbcnews.com...

"Instead of receiving the medical support and counseling [Shuai] so desperately needed, the state charged her with murder and attempted feticide," said Iyer.

Just like Muslim extremist and ISIS, will we live by religious laws crafted after bronze age book???

According to Miss Peters - we should.

Who are these people and what fraction do they represent among Christians worldwide? Because I personally never met such a person among the Christians I know.

Then set me up a bedroom. I'm coming to stay with you, because I'm surrounded by them, and I have met many from different countries. They number in the hundreds of millions world-wide. Including where you are.

I mean people who believe that non-believers will suffer eternal death and things like that.

I do know several Christians who do not subscribe to eternal death or eternal punishment. Though most do, including some foreign missionaries I have known from Africa, Europe, and South America.

I wonder if you are not projecting your own experience since you called yourself an ex-devout christian.

I don't have to project my own experience on others. All I need do is listen to what they say and believe.

It might surprise you but the majority of self professed Christian called themselves because they have Christian values in heart, not because they follow the bible or christian rituals religiously.

No. It doesn't surprise me at all. I'm not some backwoods hick that has led a sheltered life. I know, and am aware of those who "believe" that way. My question to those people is always the same. Why? What makes you think any of it is worth following or believing if you don't believe 99% of what you're reading any way? Either Jesus and God are real, and left a book for you to follow, or they are fictitious, and you're just claiming mythology as a faith. Which is it?

I doubt Jesus even wanted to start a new religion in the first place.

I doubt Jesus, as depicted in the bible ever existed at all. Let alone many of the things attributed to him. He himself is an allegory.

This isn't science hence there is no "Right" answer. It's interpretation. If all the philosophies of different peoples represented on my bookshelves are to live in peace, they need to start understanding it is always an act of interpretation. The Abrahamic faiths are the worst at this

Perhaps a good change would be for the monistic panentheist mystics to just say they are monistic panentheist mystics and drop the other labels like Jew, Christian, Muslim.

The important thing is if a heretic is a heretic in the USA, it isn't legal to kill them for heresy. Separation of Church and State. Individual religious liberty.

USA! USA!

Where's the flag waving emoticon? ATS left it out!

LOL!
I wasn't expecting that..

Because, I think people still connect to a certain path (which is called traditionalism). If I could only have my translations of the Quran and my Sufi books including Rumi, Ibn Arabi, etc. I'd still be satisfied. While I learned something from all traditions, I connect to the Qur'an and it's exegesis by enlightened mystics such as Ibn Arabi. I practice Sufism as my time and life allows. And I consider Muhammad the final prophet and have yet to need to revise that belief for myself.

I value the religious freedom and the good life in the West. I just wish it wasn't at the expense of third world countries and a million dead Iraqi's in the middle east. Western freedom is at the expense of the poor, unfortunately. Islam carries a critique of taking advantage of the poor and downtrodden (social justice). Historically there have been times Islamic societies were way more open, and colonial policies had much to do with radicalizing the ME. The same ME where Christians had no issues at all living in just 60 years ago. Unfortunately people treat the current ME as if that's all that Islam was for the last 1400 years. So the West has a valid point about science and secularism, and the East has a point about charity and the downtrodden. Unfortunately our good life and free choice is partly based on the poverty of other nations. ISIS kills christians with their bare hands while a Christian drinking starbucks kills Muslims from thousands of miles away by being complicit in the bombing and destruction of Iraq. Now there are no answers and no leaders.

We should have supported the socialists in the ME 50 years ago. Off topic but you stated the whole religious freedom USA thing so.....

Maybe we should back Assad in Syria against ISIS right now.
ISIS got Western Democratic and Saudi funding as part of the anti-Assad movement, still going on.

Ba%27ath_Party_(Iraqi-dominated_faction)
Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party
In 1966, the original Ba'ath Party was split in half; one half was led by the Damascus leadership of the Ba'ath Party which established a party in Syria, and the other half with its leadership in Baghdad. Both Ba'ath parties retained the same name and maintained parallel structures in the Arab world, but became so antagonistic that Syria — led by its Ba'ath party — became the only Arab state to support Iran against Iraq during the bloody Iran–Iraq War.
Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party – Iraq Region was banned in 2003 by the Coalition Provisional Authority following the invasion of Iraq.

The propagandists haven't figured out yet how to link Syrian Ba'ath party to ISIS. Give them a bit of time.

8-reasons-why-us-and-its-allies-are-responsible-isl amic-extremism
Even people who are otherwise sympathetic to the fight against Islamophobia will concede that Islamic extremism is a threat that deserves to be taken seriously. However, what’s lost in these debates—and what Islamophobia serves to erase—is the fact that Islamic extremism is often the direct product of Western imperialism. Many of the groups identified as proof of Islam’s violent nature enjoy their status due to having been cultivated by the West, usually as a weapon against secular leftist opposition. From the beginning of the Cold War until today, violent Islamic fundamentalism has served as a useful tool of American foreign policy.

Interesting info about the Ba'ath party in Syria. I didn't know that. I do think backing Assad against ISIS at this point may make sense. Unfortunately the complexities of the present situation are beyond my comprehension as far as answers go. There are times I feel we should let Iran clean this mess. Intellectually they can be force of progress compared to the Saudi's Salafi currents. Other times I worry that that could spark a Sunni/Shia civil war that could engulf the whole region.

I agree wholeheartedly on the causes of extremism. Unfortunately war and conflict will always be a force for regression.

I did LOL at your monistic panentheist mystic comment. Very few people realize that that is at the core of much mysticism. Not that it's always admitted or that the way too interpret those concepts are agreed upon, what fun would that be?

They'll just blame it on the witches and other pagans.

Remember when torture was considered a war crime? What happened?

Give it a couple of years, we'll be asking, "Remember when burning witches was illegal? What happened?

Who is Karis Peters and why should we care about her opinion?

We shouldn't care that much about her opinion because it's not really her opinion. If you watch the first few seconds of her video, she names the author of the poem as well as the man who "revised" it. his name is Ken Peters and he is her father. So far pretty benign. However, Ken is an Endtimes Prophet. He believes that he was given visions in his dreams back in 1980 I believe and Ken is the real source of what is being spouted in the video. His poor daughter is just his mouth piece. She's as guilty of what she says as the Duggar daughters are for not thinking they are actual victims of their pedobear toting brother. But I digress... Ken doesn't have such a hot track record for his more specific "prophecies" but luckily for him, most of them are amorphous enough to allow for plenty of open ended interpretation. Kind of like biblical prophecy in general. Here are a couple of his treats for the world-

All countries the US entered outside of God's will, God has considered encroachment and will allow these nations to afflict the US.

The US has until the end of 2003 to change it's course back to God, if it fails to do so God will judge the US as a goat nation. America's determined time.

Time of Aligning of the nations. China, Korea, Japan and Pacific Rim being aligned for end-time confederacy. L.O.N. - League of Orient Nations

Castro's replacement will make him seem like a kitty cat. We must intercede!

Africa and South America will be born-again Nations, "Nations for Jesus".

1994 Prophecy: god's of sports and entertainment to fall before 1999. More will follow!

Ken also includes a list of things to prepare for the coming end times and tribulation.

This link includes the full lists as well as a rather lengthy video from a decade ago-
www.heavenvisit.com...

He is also a member of one of my favorite kook fests in the good ole U S of A, the Prophecy Club
www.prophecyclub.com...

If you want to skip the video( trust me...skip it). here's another link that has a transcript of what he said. It will save you an hour and a half of your life that you will never get back. z3news.com...

I felt sorry for kid, but now I can just imagine how bad was her childhood with father like that.

Must be hard to have a prophetic father and no wonder his speech/poem (and agenda) has no historical ground... folks like him don't care...

Thank you for links.

I mean I get it, the dad is a moron and has influenced his daughter to say moronic things. It's just that why should I care about this opinion at all? I mean Ken Peters apparently isn't even influential enough to have a wikipedia page, so to me that just says he's just another random Christian kook. I wouldn't be surprised if he had an ATS handle actually.

In retrospect you're pretty spot on in that assessment. He's more of a random whackadoddle who doesn't like to speak a lot about his prophetic visions so it's not like he's out there proselytizing or pushing it so the Duggar comparison was probably a little extreme. It's not like he ran for Congress with part of his platform of executing rapists and pedophiles while harboring one. I was just trying to show the influence on why she was saying what she said and why. I probably over sensationalized it a tad.

Exactly, the video in the OP is the equivalent of me making a youtube video talking about the joys of agnosticism. No one is going to care about my opinion because I'm an unknown nobody.

And as for Karis, she is an unfortunate victim of this brainwashing, but it's not like she's alone. There are tons of children out there being raised with the same "facts" as she is and believe them possibly even MORE fervently than she does. Yes, it's annoying and sad that ignorance like that is being celebrated and spread, but what can you do? It's one of the drawbacks of living in a free country.

Maybe a hardcore Christian will post it on ATS saying "Look at dis crazy atheist! That's the problem with atheists today!" prompting yet another thread of people explaining why their philsophical position is the only reasonable one

Enforce a strict separation of state and religion and remove anyone who can't keep his beliefs for himself from positions like head of the Texas board of education.

Oh no, nothing can change that.

You can only teach them critical thinking in school and hope that they will learn to think for themselves when they grow up.

But when even the school books are teaching myths as literal truth, you know your country is in trouble.
