Hello!

As many regulars of this sub forum, I like to be prepared. Granted, I'm not nearly as prepared as I'd like to be- but I'm working on it when I can.

One thing that bothers me is the vast amounts of knowledge that I don't have. I tend to rely on the wiki for most things- and I happen to know that it can be downloaded without photos for less than 10GB.

Currently, my plan (someday) is to get my hands on an old kindle and load it up- 5v shouldn't be too hard to come across for keeping it charged.

Just curious- what do the rest of you have in mind? Books would be nice- but hundreds of pounds of books can't hold a candle to what a cheap microSD card can hold in terms of raw information.

I'm not sure if linking to external forums is allowed so mods please delete if not
The forum at zombiehunters.org is great for this. It's nowhere near as active as ATS, and started as mostly a 'zombie apocalypse' forum but has since expanded to cover a great deal of survivalist topics. You can find contingency plans, self sufficiency guides, survival kits, films and books that fit the topic, etc. Great forum, wish it was more active.

That is a good start, it doesn't have everything you need to know,
but I do have it in my bugout bag double wrapped in ziplock bags.

I also have two laminted copies of wild edible plants in color,
and wild medicinal plants.

I have a DVD and USB key in the bugout bag too with other info.

I consider there to be 5 core needs.

1) Knowledge of the other 4, and other things.
2) Self Defense - weapons, care for them, and how to use them
3) Shelter - fixed position, and how to make some quick on the move
with the fastest best hiding likely being the Apache scout pit.
4) Water - mobile stealth way = USP resublimated iodine crystals,
non-stealth way bio sand flter and boil, can do with makeshift solar oven.
5) Food - think things in the wilderness that other people don't see as food,
thus the wild edibles guide up above, and stay away from deadly look alikes.

What some people see as weeds can actually become food,
but expect your body to not react nicely to a radical change in diet.

It is a good way to save money if the current recession
has made your wallet a tad thin.

There is much more to it, this was just a very brief summary
to stimulate thought.

Ya, its hard to beat real world experience.

I think some of the books make good reminders on
some subjects and there is still some useful information
in them, and its hard to remember it all to be honest.

For me the unique identification of plants stops at
perhaps a couple dozen, after that I am lost.

II have some mental block against it, and thus carry
the laminated color plant id guides for my region.

You can download Wikipedia for off-line use. Wikipedia periodically bundles up their entire database and makes it available for download. I have an app on my iPhone and iPad that I use to open the Wikipedia database. A lot of the photos are scaled down, but all the articles are there. I want to say the wikipedia file size is about 4.7 gigs.

HERE is the Wikipedia page about their database downloads. I think they even have links to programs you can use to open/use them.

If you had a solar or crank charger, and some extra batteries -- you might be able to have Wikipedia around for quite a while if civilization fell.

Also a fan of the biolite stove.

Biolite stove

As it is thermoelectric may be adaptable to solar thermal.

I've seen that, and it's something I'd like to try. Another device I'm going to probably get first is the PowerPot. I uses a similar principle, but you can generate power on any heat source (like a campfire).

For keeping a kindle charged check out goal zero solar panels and batteries.......They really are nice. I own a bunch of there kit including panels and batteries and I love it all.

Hang the panel off the pack and let it charge while hiking.

The doomsdaypreppers forum (not the show) is great for this. One member has uploaded a TON of useful pdfs. Perfect for a SHTF solar-powered Kindle.

I'm not relying on any kind of technology post SHTF, I have a huge library of prepping/survival books, I also have many files of information printed off the internet, this plus knowledge and a lifetimes experience of lots of things.
