And in the same Eminem thought:

That song makes me feel invincible every time I listen to it. I'm not...but it makes me feel that way

I agree with the first choice. I am not sure about the second. I maybe being a bit picky, but I do feel an essential element of a story song is a narrative and not written in the first person.

If you can peruade me by any other examples then by all means, more music the merrier.

And just as I was about to 'click' reply' NonSpecific just gave me this example. Damn him!

You were right. A hankie was needed, I had to stop it. Who sings it so I can look for her on Spotify?

Kathy Mattea - "Where've You Been?"

Mattea's husband wrote the song in memory of his Grandparents...I saw her live in Austin once in the 90's and every person in that audience was crying (including Kathy Mattea - lol) - always makes me think of couples that have the love and guts to stick it out to the end. That includes my own parents...sigh.

Awesome idea for a thread!

This is the best version of Stagger Lee cos it rocks and you can dance to it. Love, life and tragedy : )

A bit of classic metal mixed with classic poetry - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner where Spinal Tap meets Iron Maiden. The gear worn by Maiden is like WWE for geeks. 'Hey let's wear spandex leotards and rawk!!'

IShotMyLastMuse mentioned Nick Cave and this track is legendary for Cave fans, it also ties in with Maiden's Hallowed Be Thy Name.

The first two were great! Lloyd Price definitely hits my groove spot! I love old school rock, anything with a big band in the background is always a hit with me.

I love Iron Maiden. I saw them at Sonisphere last year, and they were fantastic! Defintely a gig I will never forget.

I'm not entirely sure you could call this a story song/ballad, but it kind of fits none the less since it is about a narrator narrating his life.

Best Stones song!

A quick edit:

Concrete Blonde and Social D - a person after my own heart!

Saw both of these bands live in Deep Ellum (Dallas) around 1991 back in the day before gentrification. Johnette - what a poet.

Yeah Maiden are marthafocking awesome

If you like Lloyd Price, it fits with the OP to fire up the Temptations with Papa Was a Rolling Stone

ETA - the video is out of focus or we all need a new optician

Ultimate rock story song?

This song is from the 60's, though still relevant today - a very sad commentary on the human race...

(I played it for my teenage daughter and it upset her so much - she said, "Mom! That is song is horrible! Why'd you have to make me listen to that?!?")

I'm sorry I don't know how to embed: One Tin Soldier

Nick Cave was a great suggestion. And my all time fave is El Paso by Marty Robins. And Big Bad John... Can't remember who right now did it.
