They are not really explosions in the sense of a violent bang.
There is volcanic activity underneath the lake bed which allows co2 to seep into the cool waters at the bottom. The cool pressurized water allows a
large quantity of CO2 to dissolve into it really is a perfect environment for it.
Because the climate stays relatively stable the waters have minimal churning so the co2 remains undisturbed at the bottom in the cool waters. In the
past, when there have been heavy rains or seismic activity it has caused the water in the lakes to churn and mix. The warmer waters moving to the
bottom along with the co2 rich cooler waters moving to the top allowed the co2 to expand and form bubbles.
A shaken soda or beer accurately portrays a limnic eruption.
Lake Kivu has high concentrations of co2 and methane which if a limnic eruption occurred they could
have a true explosive lake if a spark was nearby. They are currently venting that lake and harvesting the methane to power the nearby
city.
