Didn't Dick Cheney live for a number of years with such a device?

If I recall correctly, yes. He liked to freak people out by turning off the battery pack. He did it on the Today Show.

He became "Darth Cheney"!

Another way of looking at this is, we only have a beat because mother nature only has muscle contractions to work with to get blood to move. Its not like it has anything that could produce a consistent flow.

But how did they they address the cardio pulminary part (CO2/O2 exchange) in a CONTINUOUS flow system?! Fascinating!

It's called a "lung".

"Continuous flow", not a "beat". There is a time delay there. Timing is a little bit of importance. Our system does not work on "continuous flow".

Curious, does the person have to get constant ABGs?

It works just fine that way. Why would you need pulsations to transfer gas? And, no, no they don't.
