There's probably some secret code in there to have them act up remotely. Sounds crazy, but like you said, hard to believe its a coincidence.

nope, saving SHSH Blobs via Cydia and re-loading them through Tiny Umbrella once did the trick for A4 devices or older (meaning iPhone 4 and older).
A5 chip devices and newer (starting with 4S) cannot be either downgraded or unlocked that easily and it's nearly impossible to accomplish such a thing in case you are already running iOS 8.1.2 on any fairly new device.

Don't see any reason to downgrade though. Unless, again.. you are using a very old iPhone to run the newest iOS which may seem sluggish and laggy, even with choppy graphics.
If you own iPhone 5 or newer, there is hardly any reason to downgrade your newest iOS.
