Want to update the title here? There was also a 4.7 off the coast of Guatemala/El Salvador borders, and a 5.3 off the coast of Peru. Both within 3 minutes of each other, and just 2 hours before this 7.3.

I hope a Tsunami doesn't follow that is the last thing Indonesia needs to happen again! And in areas of small villages etc.

This thing is deep but pretty much shook the crap out of the seafloor. Many many aftershocks will happen.

Likely not be related. South and Central America is also very active.

This site says the depth is more shallow, but judging by how strong people felt it I'm going with the 20 miles down scenario.

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 has hit off the Moluccas in Indonesia, the US Geological Survey says, and a tsunami warning has been issued for the area near the quake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said hazardous tsunamis were possible within 300km of the quake's epicentre. The centre said there was no danger of a Pacific-wide tsunami.

The quake was measured at a depth of 47km, with the epicentre 134km northwest of Ternate.

The undersea quake struck at a depth of 46 kilometres (28 miles), 154 kilometres northwest of Kota Ternate, the USGS said.

"Tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kilometres," said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The centre said tsunami waves could hit parts of Indonesia, as well the Philippines, Japan, Taiwan and islands in the South Pacific.

Thinking of the people in this area. Hope they are alright. It seems to always strike areas that are poverty stricken and highly populated. So, fingers crossed. But a lot of "ring of fire" activity.
