Interesting find today...

Every so often nature provides an experience that wasn't expected and it did so today whilst stripping an old roof. I was tearing back the old felt and battens to replace them, ready for new tiles, when I saw this surreal-looking sight.



It's an 'infant' wasp nest that never got the chance to get past a few days old. The image looks like something out of a science-fiction movie and is a golf-ball sized nest suspended in air by a cobweb.



I was lucky enough to be able to pick it up without it disintegrating as the cobweb acted like a , duh, web and just hung it perfectly between the fingers. If you look carefully, there's a suggestion of the hexagonal structure inside...



There's a clearer, almost identical one over here...look. The plan was to hairspray the crap out of it and give it my oldest nephew because he's four and they love that stuff. I left it somewhere safe and the damn wind smited it into nothing.

The grey ball-bearings are insulation-foam that gets injected into cavities - it's like polystyrene. If they were spider eggs, this thread wouldn't exist...hard to take photos and flinch at the same time lol

@ WanDash - no idea. Would be cool if someone would fill in the details.

Those were hornets, not wasps, and that was a newly forming nest. Syx.

That one was made by baby wasp, daddy wasp is on his way

Wouldn't have been terribly pleased if they were wasps, either.

Nature is amazing!

How such tiny creatures are programmed for making such perfect elaborate structures is awesome. Lucky for you it wasn't a live nest.

All you need now is to find some owls up there!
