The link above has a decent explanation in a video of what is occurring in the arctic.

This says differently.

Have you ever been to the South Pole? Neither have I. And there are high odds neither one of us is ever going to get there. So we have to depend on experts to tell us what is happening there. So what do the experts tell us is going on? Here is the problem. There are two totally different reports that have reached me today:

From Al Gore’s website:

A large section of the mighty West Antarctica ice sheet has begun falling apart and

its continued melting now appears to be unstoppable, two groups of scientists

reported on Monday. If the findings hold up, they suggest that the melting could

destabilize neighboring parts of the ice sheet and a rise in sea level of 10 feet or more

may be unavoidable in coming centuries.

Global warming caused by the human-driven release of greenhouse gases has helped

to destabilize the ice sheet, though other factors may also be involved, the scientists said.

The second post comes from WattsUpWithThat:

The National Snow and Ice Data Centre said the rapid expansion has continued into

May and the seasonal cover was now bigger than the record “by a significant margin’’.

“This exceeds the past record for the satellite era by about 320,000sq km, which was

set in April 2008,’’ the centre said.

This says differently.

Not really.

This topic is about west Antarctic land ice. Not Antarctic sea ice. The increase in the extent of sea ice is attributable to changing wind patterns and would have no effect on sea levels. Loss of Antarctic land ice, on the other hand, would have an effect on sea levels.

The big question is, "are you voting democrat or republican?" Because that's what this is all about. I'm voting republican.

I will vote for the turd sandwiches who are least likely to screw things up worse, but I am glad you found a club to be part of that has to make things easier on you at the voting booth. You don't need to educate yourself on the issues or even the candidates you can just look for the letter R.

The thing about republicans that makes them least likely to screw things up versus any democrat is that they dont like to change America much. They don't interfere with the American people's way of life to anywhere near the degree that Democrats like to. Whereas the progressive democrats like to throw legislation at the wind blowing in a direction that, with their small, feeble minds, they have deemed, "the wrong direction". All in the name of change. By voting republican, I get the most likely assurance that my America will be left alone by ignorant human controllers who think they are wise enough to determine the path we should go every step of the way. By voting Republican, we have the greatest chance that we will remain the America that our founding fathers envisioned- a free America. While it may be true that somewhere along the way, they all screw up, the democratic agenda is one that has screwing America up written in the fine print of their hard copy guide book.

The fact is, I vote Republican because I do know who I'm voting for. I know what it means to be a Republican, and I have found that the values of a Republican align closest with my own, regardless of the Republican. So if you tell me you are a Republican, I already know approximately what you believe in and what your agenda is (assuming you're not lying about your political affiliation), and I already know I agree with you way more than I would ever agree with anyone from any other party. The values from Republican to Republican differ slightly, but the values between Democrat and Republican differ dramatically always. So I will be voting Republican always because I want America to stay America.

You might think that me voting Republican means I'm not educated on the issues, but the fact is, if you don't know what party you're going to vote for and you want to judge the elections on a person to person basis, you aren't educated on the issues.

Not sure what to make of this report 13 feet and the White house report 6.6 feet , cause that would be 19.6 feet. Were the two reports kept separate ,so not to scare people . To keep everyone from going out and investing in new beach front property or to make sure they keep paying for property that will one day be under water.

The Three Gorges dam was brought up . A total of 12 dams are planned . What will be the new water temp by the time it enters the ocean + or - a few degrees or will it just be blamed on Climate change.

Seen another report the other day.
NASA: Warm Rivers Play Role in Arctic Sea Ice Melt
www.jpl.nasa.gov...
80% of its tributaries have been dammed . So what percent of the worlds river are now dumping warmer water into the ocean . Don't worry about it till someone comes out with a scary video

Well it seems you came out of the mold exactly like they wanted. Seems you fell for everything hook line and sinker. I guess that is fine in "your" America but it isn't just yours. Thank goodness. At least I/we all now know why you vote letters instead of issues.

As to address this

f you don't know what party you're going to vote for and you want to judge the elections on a person to person basis, you aren't educated on the issues.

That statement is completely contradictory.

FYI I am independent I think for myself. My demographic also is usually the one that decides the elections so when you see the bobble heads kowtowing each election on different issues looking like idiots whether you like it or not they aren't trying to earn your vote because they already had it or didn't they are trying to convince me and those like me they are worthy of my vote. In reality none of them actually believe what they are spouting they only care about being elected or re-elected which is why they try to keep their promises to my demographic because they want to keep those seats for their corrupt lying arses.

Interestingly enough, it's melting right where the volcano is forming and they predicted it would in 2011:

"'High heat flow through the crust in this region may influence the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.'"

Except that the ice loss which is allowing the shelf to slip into the ocean is occurring because of warmer water being brought to the surface by changing wind patterns.

The ice loss has been occurring over the past 40 year (at least), while there is no evidence of volcanic activity.

So I wonder.. What could be the expected changes due to shifting mass on tectonic plates? I mean there is a huge load of ice pressing both poles down. What will happen with the vertical position of the crust when that pressure is released. It will not release all at once but would the poles rise a bit? And what parts will go down?

Phage, even that side of the arguement states:

One must also be careful how you interpret trends in Antarctic sea ice. Currently this ice is increasing overall and has been for years

Your side says it's the West Antartic and East Antartic ice sheets that are more important, not the increasing sea ice.

All the sea ice talk aside, it is quite clear that really when it comes to Antarctic ice and sea levels, sea ice is not the most important thing to measure. In Antarctica, the largest and most important ice mass is the land ice of the West Antarctic and East Antarctic ice sheets.

And the West Antarctic Ice sheet is melting due to the volcano, exactly as predicted.

Here are some possible solutions:

Overpopulation: to me, no country should have more than 500 million. Every country should have an infomercial or some kind of TV programs urging people to have less kids, and very importantly, explain why they need to do it, especially in 3rd World Countries.

Work: use public transportation(or use motorcycles, though I highly doubt most people are willing to do that.)

Food: to me, every fastfood establishment should have a delivery type service, this will eliminate the need to drive.

Education: as I've said before, you can pretty much learn about most stuff online. In fact, I propose that we have a contest, some countries will learn their stuff online, others learn from the tradition classroom sets. In the next PISA test, we have a contest as to see who learned more.

Let the rest of the time be spent for learning specialized skills for jobs.

There is ALWAYS a way to adjust to something. It's just a matter if people are willing to do it.

Have to find a way to re-treat the oceans from pollutions damage - CLEAN them w/o harming sea life further and reset oceanic currents...

Massive job that will require ALL* of mankind and maybe others minds to fix. And the possible timers can be removed, crisis timers. Also climate change dates where forecasted previously hundreds of years away, years back but? So a global effort needs to be taken.
If all this time can go into finding ways to develop technology for some of the most useless reasons there exist energy to fix or at least concentrate on the ROOF inhabitant realms of EA*RTH issues. And it may take ALL* nations effort to adjust all the seas...

Both papers conclude that warm water upwelling from the ocean depths has most likely triggered an inherent instability that makes the West Antarctic ice sheet vulnerable to a slow-motion collapse. And one paper concludes that factors some scientists had hoped might counteract such a collapse will not do so.

This part has me perplexed. I have always been under the assumption that the deep ocean water is at or Below freezing but the salinity keeps it liquid. Also any warming that has taken place in the oceans would have "heated" the top layers, not the very bottom layers. If the deep water is warming, wouldn't it be volcanic in nature? Sounds like they are saying the bottom water is the culprit, doesn't make sense to me.

Seems that the water is pretty deep:

The Southern Ocean has typical depths of between 4,000 and 5,000 m (13,000 to 16,000 ft) over most of its extent with only limited areas of shallow water. The Southern Ocean's greatest depth of 7,236 m (23,740 ft) occurs at the southern end of the South Sandwich Trench, at 60°00'S, 024°W. The Antarctic continental shelf appears generally narrow and unusually deep, its edge lying at depths up to 800 m (2,600 ft), compared to a global mean of 133 m (436 ft).

So what exactly is the problem here? When I fill up my glass of water with ice cubes and they melt, the water level stays the same. Seems pretty basic to me....

I don't think most people want a lot of kids, they are just too stupid to use proper protection. The only real way to combat overpopulation is by sterilizing people.
