Stealing is taking something that doesn't belong to you without permission. It is not and I repeat not, failing to live up to someone else's code of what to spend money on.

People on welfare have rubbish enough lives anyway. That's why some of them turn to drink and drugs.

No matter how hard some guy at the bottom works, he is never going to afford a nice home, new car, a family holiday. Never going to put his kids through university or get them a place in chambers or something like that.
So why should he strive? When he knows damn well that he'll work 12 or sixteen hours just to pay the rent and buy value meals from the checkout while people that everyone knows are crooked get to drive big mercs and drink champagne for breakfast?

You want to punish these poor folks but it will do you zero good in the end. They'll still have rubbish lives, yours won't be any better and your taxes won't go down.
Instead, if you take the tax that's owed by the rich, you might get free education and health care for everyone. That would improve your life.

You are wrong. Do your homework before you write checks you can't cash.

Welfare Recipients Take EBT to Disney World and Vegas

Californians have, of course, been the undisputed 50-state champions of transitional-living-fund spending across state lines. At a stratospheric $69 million from 2007 to 2010: well, can’t touch that, transitional-living-fund-wise. The top out-of-state venue for poverty-stricken, transitional-living-fund-wielding Californians? Las Vegas. $11.8 million spent by starving California children, much of it at casinos and co-located ATMs.

Remind me, wasn’t Obama lecturing CEOs about spending money in Vegas? I guess that doesn’t apply to his voting base.

I'm guessing that people only get welfare if they don't work full time. .. but, 11 million over three years. ..How much was pumped into wall street every month for the last few years? And wall street is already full of zillionaires...

Do you get welfare if you work? How much can you earn before its zero? If you can be on welfare and get a holiday sometime, go for it. You won't ever be financially comfortable, but you can forget about the misery of the human condition for a few days.

I have a better idea. Mr. I live in the UK but will tell you how to spend your tax dollars in the U.S.

We send all our welfare recipients over the pond to you, and you pay for their vacations and tatts and booze....

Sounds good to me...

Bit snarky, that fella. I was merely pointing out the fact that you wouldn't make anyone's lives better by making the poorest people's lives worse. Instead of sending your poor, your huddled masses to the old country, you could just ask nicely and we might let you back in the empire. ..umm, I mean commonwealth.

We'll since they have enough money left over to get some tats or sexy undies then the government should give them less money and take care of someone more needy.

Sure. Punish them so they suffer even more and will have absolutely no fun or hope or illusion of a better life or for that matter even learn how to budget or make decisions for themselves. That's very smart.

How will tattoos and sexy undies give you a better life?

If you have extra money then put it in the bank for the future so you can get ahead, but then again bad spending habits is probably the largest contributor to going broke.

Good. Now someone tell me why you can still buy soda pop and candy with food stamps.

Why are we subsidizing the Coca-Cola company?

Read my other post. This is probably unexplainable to one who believes in kicking someone when they're down and forcing them into a smaller and smaller corner.

And aside from that? Who are you to judge where the undies or the tattoo came from? Are you going to sign up for the welfare police? If so, I hope your investigations are very thorough.

And furthermore? I find it ironic to the extreme that it seems to be the people generally this close to welfare themselves and who claim self-reliance and self-sufficiency and that government is too big that support this kind of idiocy, don't you?

And pardon me, but lmfao@the thought that welfare money can be saved up to make some sort of difference. Maybe after a thousand years of saving.

Never forget: Not even a single little ray of sunshine is allowed into your life if you're poor.

What the F?

After reading yours and a couple of other posts i'm almost having a change of heart about welfare in America.
You people are insane thinking you can decide what others can eat or drink.

In Europe, aka. normal western countries welfare recipients get discounts for zoo's, children swimming lessons, theaters and all other things regarding culture and children entertainment.

No tatts, no fake nails, no alcohol involved. Geez.

Welfare recipients need undies too and Victoria's Secret, if you play their coupons right, can net you panties for less than a buck.
I do not really care what it gets spent on. I see it helping my community keep stores open more than helping any individual that much anyway. How much jewelry can you get on 700 a month income anyway?

Why not just give welfare in the form of food-stamps, clothing-stamps and housing-stamps? Those are the only three things a human can be said to really need for their dignity, health and survival. That solves the entire welfare system.

Please note, i wasn't criticising Wal Mart..i don't even know what it's like...only what you see on the movies, not to mention on Youtube

don't misunderstand. criticize away at wal-mart, they more than deserve it. just don't criticize them for things they aren't actually guilty of which gives them a shot at saying "see people just make up stuff". there is MORE THAN ENOUGH real reasons to criticize them for. like for example how many of their employees are on things like food stamps and welfare. trust me i could go on and on and on about all the issues i know about.

How is this punishing? How? Please specifically tell me how not allowing them to spend their welfare benefits on tattoos is "punishment". And yes, taking that money that could be used for someone who truly needs it to eat and spending it on tattoos is "Stealing", just like taking food from the food bank when you don't need it is stealing regardless if you "qualify" for it.

Take some responsibility for yourself instead of whining about big corporations keeping you down. Somehow millions of people who actually work hard and live conservatively (fiscally) wind up making better lives for themselves in spite of your nonsensical comment claiming otherwise. There are people out there in wheelchairs and missing limbs for crying out loud making a living by working. Welfare has a purpose and it is not to provide the good life. It is to help those who literally cannot get by, feed, clothe and shelter themselves and their families.

I started with nothing, worked hard, paid for my own university, and now make a modest middle income as an engineer because I work hard, don't waste, and don't sit around and wait for someone to hand me life.

Good thing you have the attitude you do. Maybe you can pass that " You'll never get ahead cause the man keeps you down" attitude on to you children. That's what a good parent does, right? You are as much the problem as greedy business and can't even see it.

Agree 100%. I would be 100% in favor of spending even more on the programs if I could guarantee they were getting these things. I would happily pay more taxes for a van to go door to door three times a day delivering healthy meals than pay what I do to see the guy next to me in line buying a damn steak with his EBT that I can't (choose not to so I don't live paycheck to paycheck) afford. I would happily pay more to have a welfare store that only carries real and healthy food and clothing, and they can just come take it for free. It isn't about the money, it is about what we are teaching people with this system and what is truly "good" for people in need.

for the same reason you can buy garbage like, juices that are just as bad if not worse that pop, and prepackaged foods that are unhealthy. it's far CHEAPER than healthy food. and as an added bonus with prepackaged food it takes a lot less power (ie cheaper), than to use a stove or microwave for a few minutes than an oven for an hour, plus burners, to cook healthy meals. lets be honest they go as cheap as they can, to make ends meet, and just maybe have a bit left over for some small "extras" to get at least some small pleasure in life. and that's where candy comes in, it's a heck of a lot cheaper than healthy snack foods.

yeah i see welfare people driving nice cars and have lots of fancy stuff. the only ones i know like that tho are those getting other income, like working under the table, "baby sitting" or dealing and such on the side. or getting gifts from other people like family, to give them a bit of a boost, like giving them their old car when they buy a new one after three years, or giving the kids a new tv and video games for birthdays and Christmas. other than that they tend to live rather sad boring lives, barely making ends meet.

No. It's not. And that was my point initially. But poor people aren't cattle. Why should they exist in the dark and all be painted with one broad brush when the reality is they aren't all like this.

So some knee-jerk politicians take the easy way out and pass some knee-jerk law that really doesn't address any of the real issues we face with this and other examples like it and get some knee-jerk votes and rah-rahs.

So, drug test the poor. Tell them they can't have a candy bar now and then or feel sexy or forego part of their budget for a tattoo. They're poor. They deserve to be controlled.

Well remember this while you rah-rah. If we don't address the true root causes, if we continue to argue about and focus on and pass more and more laws like this and continue to think that the rest of us are somehow above it, somehow immune, we're mistaken. The number poor is ever-increasing ,by design, and one day we may all be living under these "laws" we've created. Or worse. The poor are not stealing your tax money or your pensions or the value of your home. They are not the root cause.

And so again, it's ironic to me that the very people who fear big government would support and join in with even more "laws" like this.

Laws like this, that get some emotions up and stir some outrage, well they're really serving only one master. And they're using us (or trying to) to do it...to build our own prison, to dig our own graves. That so few even see this....

They used to do this before the EBT cards. But there was abuse even then. When I was in college, people with food stamps often traded them for cash to someone who was really only going to go buy food anyway. Then they clamped down by requiring ID so people just gave them the list of food they needed and the person with the stamps would go get it and they trade the food for cash. People are creative.

ETA: This also goes to cutting jobs. They don't want to hire people to do the oversight (big government eek) so they pass a law and let who deal with it?

Aside from that, the contract for welfare clearly states what the assistance is and is not for, so why is this law even necessary to begin with? If it's a law can they then send the local cops to lock you up, or what?
